Toronto Tops The East And The Balloting

Toronto, Ontario (AP)- Toronto is starting to cruise into the playoffs. There are 14 games remaining and the Stallions hold a tenuous 5 point lead over the Icedogs and 6 points over the Corinthians. Curtis Joseph played his best hockey this past week, starting with two shutouts back-to-back against the Spokane Chiefs (8-0) and then the Mississauga Vipers(2-0). Toronto then hosted the slumping Oceanics, and beat them 6-2. Toronto's only loss this week came at the hands of the Mississauga Icedogs 7-6. The Stallions bounced right back the next night beating the defending Cup champions 3-1.

And to make the week perfect, it was released today that GM Brian Howe led all balloting for GM of Team Canada, as well Darryl Sittler led all balloting for Canada's coaching job.

Bulls Settle In For The Playoffs

Oakville, Ontario (AP)- Well, after what was a very active week to say the least the Bulls are looking to settle things down a bit. This week saw the Bulls make a fairly large deal that sent away fan favourite Nikolai Khabibulin and some others in a deal that landed the Bulls scoring winger Valeri Kamensky, stay at home defenceman Ivan Droppa, and some others. On top of this there was a lot of hype after the game against the Oceanics, where the Bulls blew them out 10-1.

Although the trade deadline is approaching quickly Bulls GM Chris Kubinec has stated that he will no longer pursue deals, if the right offers come his way he will review them, but as of now the Bulls don't think they will be making anymore 'key' changes.

Hamilton's A Seller Instead Of A Buyer This Year

Hamilton, Ontario (AP)- After what had been two very successful season the Hamilton Steelcats have disappointed this season. This has been a miserable season for the Steelcats who have been slipping further and further behind the elite teams.

"We just didn't get the job done from the very start of the season. Didn't have the necessary offense to be a winning team in this league. We made some bad moves that's very true but I think the additions of guys like Kaberle, Tremblay and most importantly Thornton and Savard will be beneficial to this team in the long run." (GM)

So this very successful WHL team has now been reduced to being sellers at the trade deadline instead of buyers as they have been in past years. This team has some key ingredients for being a successful team in the near future. Joe Thornton, Marc Savard, Alex Tanguay and JP Dumont will be the core of a very young team with Derek Morris, Tomas Kaberle, Yannick Tremblay, Robyn Regehr and Martin Skoula manning the point. Will the trade deadline bring in some new bodies? Likely yes, Daniel Briere who is a star on a good WHL team could be moved as could Stefan Yelle and a few others.

Brathwaite Sent to Dugout

Victoria, British Columbia - Fred Brathwaite was sent to Yorkton this evening to get back in shape. After strutting his stuff in the preseason with 4 wins including a shutout, 1 loss, a 2.80 gaa and stellar save% of .913. Unfortunately the Freddy bubble burst in regular season play as he fell to 1 win in 7 games and found a new home in the pressbox. "Who knows, maybe Freddy will be a playoff goalie for us, quipped Bill Torrey, stranger things have happened."

As it sits, the Isles are enjoying a 6-game winning streak, the longest string of the season. The team has climbed from the basement of the Pacific Division to challenge for a playoff spot. This is not to confuse the Islanders with any elite teams, but since the acquisition of Guy Hebert the wins have been fairly consistent. Another reason for this streak has been the power play, now rated 3rd overall behind the IceDogs and Bulls. With team penalty killing closing in to a more respectable 80%, the play of the special teams has made a difference.

The most radical change in team chemistry has been the backend, starting with Hebert and Manny Fernandez who should be a bona fide starter next season. Gone are the high flying game breakers of Leetch, Zubov and Niedermayer (ouch) who were obviously handcuffed by the ineptness of low scoring forwards. In their place, the Isles elected to go for physical aggressiveness and power with Mironov, Eriksson, Buzek, Aki Berg, Klee waiting in the wings and Lukowich on the farm. The Isles now have something they previously lacked .. an identity. This is the influence of Alternate Governor and Vice President, Bill Torrey who stressed, build from the net out.

As the trade line approaches, don't look for anything dramatic. The Isles have their picks which they will likely keep. Brett Hull who was previously thought to be on the block because of his outspokenness will remain with the team until after the season rerates. He will be worth more to us next season assuming he doesn't retire.

Edmonton Looks For More Deals Before The Deadline

Edmonton, Alberta - With the trade deadline only a few days away, it's no secret that the Vikings are still actively pursuing a few deals. Among the team needs are a scoring left winger and a veteran defenceman. The team is also hoping to secure a high (read top 4) pick in this year's entry draft.

It is looking more and more like the Vikings will take on the Chi-Town Krushers in the first round of the playoffs again. The Krushers won last year's series 4 games to 3 with a Game 7 victory on Edmonton ice. Of the twenty skaters that suited up for Edmonton in that game only nine remain with the club.

Team management is said to be rather pleased at the acquisition of right winger Nikita Alexeev in last week's trade with the Chicoutimi Sparrows. While they gave up a first round pick in this year's draft, scouts are said to be quite high on Alexeev and hope he'll be with the big club by WHL9. Unfortunately for him the Vikings have a logjam on the right side with Anson Carter, Bill Guerin, Niklas Sundstrom, Jamie Langenbrunner and Vaclav Varada all currently on the pro roster.  Expect at least one of them to be moved this summer if not before the deadline.

The team has to be disappointed with the play of backup goaltenders Garth Snow and Dan Cloutier. Snow has been especially bad, with a 4.07 GAA and an .857 save percentage.

Jim Matheson for the WHL Weekly.

Dropkicks Poised For The Playoffs

New England, Massachusetts - The Dropkicks are pleased with the makeup of the team and are poised for the playoffs. It would take a tremendous deal for the Kicks to materially change their lineup until next season.... It looks like second place in the conference is where they'll end up but anything can happen....the Dropkicks normally strong defense corps has suffered a string of mild injuries lately. Poti, McLaren, Yushkevich and Hatcher all suffered minor injuries, as has Doug Weight for the umpteenth time this season.

Chiefs Chief Tells It Like It Is

Spokane, Washington - The Spokane Chiefs GM had this to say about this weeks games. "We Jerk around!, the boys played like a bunch of sissies!, notice I didn't call them MEN!. If our boys don't start to play like a well oiled machine... well then I guess we are just gonna have to trade all of them and start from scratch. As of today, no player in the organization has stepped up and taken control of the team, including the coach. Therefore everyone is expendable."

Pittsburgh Explains

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Endless trade away their number 1 pick? The 2nd overall... or at least what looks set to be the 2nd overall. Why the hell would they do such a lame ass thing??

Well, it pretty much says it all in the offer: Sivek, Lyashenko, Tallinder & Boyes. The team was a tad too old and bringing in this new blood means that we lower our age while at the same time set higher goals for the future. The whole team is actually looking better and better. With the one pick we would have most likely brought in Richards or even more likely, Kovalchuk. One player vs 4. It's that simple. We did give up Roche, Matteau & Gaudreau but that was just because we had no room for the players otherwise...

Breakdown of the players and our hopes for them:

Sivek: We have pretty high hopes for this kid. If he can do a "Havlat" then we're looking good. Never bet against the Czechs/Slovaks!! :)
Boyes: We really like this kid. The fact that he players for the Leafs is a major setback of course but maybe, just maybe he will still prove himself :D
Lyashenko: Last season he looked great but as things in are Dallas (NHL) he is a long termer. However he showed sparks of brilliance last season and if he develops... bingo!
Tallinder: He was a throw in and is a decent looking young defender. With the average age of our defensive corps that's not a bad thing!!

The future looks brighter in Midian and hopefully the team will grow now that they know that we will not bring in some over hyped kid to save them :D

Have a nice day all, says GM Bily of Endless

Voodoo Noos

Vancouver, British Columbia - The Voodoo had a good week, despite dropping a game to the Express. "The team is really playing well right now and we are firing on all cylinders," said team captain Mike Peca.

Owen Nolan has fit in well with 5 goals and 5 assists in 11 games.  "Took me a game or two to get used to the style out here, but I am really liking it now.  It is similar to Edmonton but there is a little more offensive focus in Vancouver.  I am really enjoying it so far" said Nolan.

It doesn't look like the Voodoo will be making any deals before deadline day, "Right now we are happy with the this team and really see no areas we want to improve" said assistant GM Pat Quinn, "we have received a few offers for some big name players, which we really have no interest in dealing."

Playoff Report

This will serve as a playoff picture preview for now:

Magic Number equals any combination of wins by the 8th place team and losses by the team listed that will eliminate that team. e.g.

Steelcats have 59 points in 65 games and the Lunatics have 35 points in 65 games. If the 'Cats were to lose every game they played from now to the end of the season, they'd still have 59 points. If the Lunatics were to lose just 8 more of their 19 games and win the other 11 they could only amass 57 points. So their Magic Number is 8, either 8 losses by them or 8 wins by the 'Cats would mathematically eliminate their chances of making the playoffs.

If you still don't understand, too bad. :)

Corinthians and Sparrows are still swapping the 2nd and 4th spots but the Corinthians seem to have a bit of an edge this time. Meanwhile the Vipers jump into the playoffs with a 3-1-0 week vaulting them over the slumping Enforcers and Steelcats. And the race to the golf course has started with the Lunatics the clear favourites to win. The Hawks should quickly join them.

The Krushers and Vikings are continually swapping the 4th and 5th spots for home ice in their series. But don't count out the Islanders. Victoria have quietly come from 8th spot up to 6th and are only 9 points out of 5th. The Chiefs are slowly slipping out of contention as they are now 4 points out of the 8th spot and the Saints remain 6 points out. The Endless are going to give eastern teams a run for that golf course.

Olympic Update

First off, I'd like to thank everyone that voted. But I have to point out that two GM's felt their time was better spent elsewhere. After sending the following two GM's three, count them...three! ballots to return, they could not be bothered. For those of you who did respond, you know how much time it took but they simply could not be bothered I guess.

So, kudos to all and a big fat raspberry to Scott Baden and newcomer Amrit Singh, cast a ballot next time! >:(

Secondly, questions will always be raised after the balloting, but I have to state here that I am amazed that people have such short memories. One of the nominations for Team Canada GM was two-time Cyber Cup champion GM Kris Pongratz. And while 16 of 17 ballots were cast, the guy gets only 2 votes? Now, maybe personalities were involved in the balloting I'm not sure but then I'd have to question the votes other guys got. The guy did win two Cups in the WHL (probably would have been three, but the Venom surprised everyone in 1999). So Team Canada loses probably the best possible candidate for the position. And to make matters worse, "I" am reduced to having to defend a westerner...and that makes me so mad.
