This powerful, young right winger has demonstrated amazing puck handling skills and proved this with 2 goals and 5 assists in the last five games for the Bulls.

11 goals ties him for the lead in goals despite the handicap of playing for the Dropkicks. The bad news is he'll miss the next four games due to a back injury. If this team turns things around it'll be due in large part to this guy.

Nine assists in ten games isn't too shabby, but the 'Kicks brought this guy on board to score goals. Then again, when your team is sucking as badly as the Dropkicks are, you have to look for positives.

From the Toronto Stallions

Toronto - The Stallions week started great with a strong 4-1 win over their conference nemesis the Quebec City Corinthains. They followed that with a disappointing 5-5 tie against the Seattle Saints. Things went from bad to worse after that with a 4-1 loss to the Rocky Mountain Express. Limping home they faced the Saints again, only to duplicate the previous inept performance in another 5-5 tie. The week, however, finished on an up beat with a sound thrashing of provincial and divisional rivals the Waterloo Lunatics by a score of 9-2. Waterloo has struggled to score goals this year, sitting with the leagues worst 19 goals for. But they were managing to hover close to the .500 mark with their defence, which prior to the Toronto game was a league leading 21 goals against. Even after that game they manage to remain tied to for third best. Joe Sakic and Wendel Clark both managed hat tricks in the game and newly returned Derek King supplied 4 assists to give him 5 points in 2 games! Welcome back Derek.

The upcoming week will see the return of Johan Lindbom, who missed the Waterloo game with a sore back, and Zigmund Palffy. Palffy was injured in the first game of the season in Oakville, on a questionable hit be Scott Stevens.

This week will see Toronto in Almont to face the lowly Raiders. Then home to play the hated Mississauga IceDogs, it is rumoured that Tie Domi is to be called up for this game. Toronto then starts a six game road trip in New England playing the struggling Dropkicks, then off to Des Moines to face Joe Thornton and the Dominators. Finally they will play the Saints in Seattle to try and win the rubber match between these two teams.

From the Oakville Bulls

Oakville - The Bulls have fallen into their first slump of the season with a two game losing streak, and with the next 3 games against the Express, Voodoo and Sparrows the Bulls need to get back on track in a hurry or they may find themselves below .500 for the first time this season.

The Bulls are looking for another first or second line winger, and they have said to be shopping around the likes of Zubov, Stevens, Buchanan, Krupp, and Galley to find that winger. So if anyone is interested in acquiring another top d-man for their defence then send your offers in.

From the New England Dropkicks

News 'N' Views
Hartford - The injury to Selanne will likely reduce goals per game to pathetic new depths, unless Zhamnov, Drury and Smyth can start to fill the net as was expected when acquired. Smyth scored his first goal of the season vs the Steelcats, Coach Langlois has expressed disappointment in his performance but remains confident that the youngster with the killer mullet can turn it on.

The flu bug hit this team hard, with Foote, Weight, Zhamnov and Dafoe all feeling under the weather at press time.

Trade Block
One would expect a fire sale from the usually trade happy GM of this team. In fact, nobody is "on the block" so to speak. Needless to say Kordyback is listening to all offers, except ones from Brian Howe and Chris Kubinec, both who suffer from a condition known as "Retarded Offeritis". Just kidding folks...the Dropkicks are listening to anything that will guarantee Cyber Cup victory, even from the Toronto contingent.

Jerk of the Week
Former Dropkicks Marketing Coordinator Ryan Doderai- who was let go after suggesting that the Dropkicks adopt third jerseys similar to those of the old NHL Canucks "V" unis.

"I obviously was spending too much time at the gym, and listening to Broken Nose records," said the out of work bum, "but when the time comes me and my brother are gonna kick some ass..."

Hardly WHL related but true.

From the Des Moines Dominators

Des Moines - The Des Moines Dominators are presently surprised at their 4-4-2 record through the first ten games. Vetern winger John MacLean has taken his leadership abilities and is showing the young guys what it takes to win. MacLean is tied for the Dominators in points with four goals and seven assists in ten games. Youngster Marco Sturm has three goals and eight assists. Joe Thornton, who is being looked at to make a big impact again this season has finally come alive with seven goals and eight points in the last five games giving him seven goals and nine points on the year. Mike Richter was the man in the preseason and the start of the season but lately GM Jason Kolsrud has let Mike Dunham take the reigns, which makes one wonder if Mike Richter will be on his way out of Des Moines where he has spent his whole career. Rumour has it that the Doms are looking at trading MacLean and Rick Tocchet, possibly with a pick added in, for a younger right winger. As well as that they are also looking at trading Richter, possibly with a pick added in, for a better goaltender.

From the Victoria Islanders

Victoria - The Islanders are pleased with the re-acquisition of left winger Marty McInnis from the Steve Yzerman trade. Before the trade, the 3rd line struggled for respectability. Mike Sullivan, Igor Larionov and Ken Klee did not enjoy competitive chemistry. Individual rating factors forced a few lineup shuffles with newly acquired Jeff O'Neill still battling the old 10 gameday flu syndrome. Marty, placed on a line with O'Neill and Klee has formed a solid third line line. In the last two games he has picked up one goal and 2 assists while bringing his +/- up to +3. This is the type of performance we were hoping he could provide.

 Marty McInnis        GP  G  A   Pt  +/-

                       8  1  2   3   0
 Preseason stats      10  3  7  10   4

The preseason stats show Marty's contribution as Steve Y's left wing. I know everyone is asking, then why was he traded? We obviously erred in judgement, but had hoped Steve Konowalchuk could provide similar stats and leadership. Not to criticize Steve, but Marty does have that extra speed.

Marty McInnis     R  LW   6  7  6  7  6  8  8  6  6  7  6  73

The Isles were pleased to present this short profile on a player who does make a difference, Marty McInnis.

PLAYERS ON THE BLOCK
No player is untouchable on the Isles roster but trades just for the sake of trading don't turn my crank. Isles will seriously look at offers that would upgrade our goaltending.

Editors note: Someone obviously leaked this press notice to McInnis who responded with 2 goals and the first star selection as the Isles sank the J-Naughts 3-1.

From the Chi-town Krushers

KRUSHERS COMING AROUND AFTER SLOW START

Chi-Town (AP) - With a 4-1 win over Brad "Draft Swindler" Schott's overrated Southampton Seagulls, the Chi-Town Krushers finally pulled themselves up to the .500 mark, in which has been a very unusual season for the American division thus far.

The Oceanics and Endless leading the division? The Krushers and Dropkicks treading water? All is not right with the world to be sure, and the Krushers new coach, Joel Quenneville, assured the media that his team has turned the corner:

"Without a doubt, this hasn't been the start we hoped for," explained Coach Q after practice today, "we had a great preseason, but perhaps we didn't let the lines play together enough. Only recently have we started to see the players click with one another."

With the exception of the 1st unit, also known as the BROKO-5 (Blake, Olsson, Roenick, Kovalenko, Khristich), the rest have the Krushers have just plain sucked like Brad Schott's mother at a swing party.

This has been apparent all season, as the newest additions to the Krushers such as Robert Reichel, Adam Oates, Richard Zednik, and Jiri Slegr have been the team's worst players. A new coach, a new system, and many new players. Is this a repeat of last season, when the Krushers started slow, and gelled near the end?

"I sure hoped so," commented Krushers GM Jes Golbez, in between sips of his favorite protein drink, "after our preseason, I thought we should be dominating the teams in the American Division like the cheap bitches they are."

"Instead of that," added Golbez, "We've choked on leads like Kordyback chokes his chicken every night, and we've scored less than Brian Howe at a feminist rally!"

Although the fans have had to suffer with a 5-5-1 record early on, Thursday night's match up against the vaunted Dropkicks should be a great one. With the Dropkicks mired in a losing skid, and the Krushers amidst a modest unbeaten streak, this game is set to be one of the season's best to date. Coach Q hasn't stated who would start in net, although it will likely be Chris Rogles, as Kidd stunk up the joint vs. the Dropkicks earlier this season.

The Good:
The BROKO-5 Unit - It's not easy to think of a good nickname for this group, but they are supplying ALL of the offense for the Krushers to date. They play against other teams' top units, and come out on top. The Krushers wouldn't be in the playoff hunt without this group.

Most specifically, the great 2-way play of Ukrainian Dimitri Khristich. He is currently 2nd in the league with 12 assists, and his +11 rating is among the league leaders. His great passing and defensive play have silenced all of his critics, who wondered where his offense after he didn't produce much last season.

The Bad:
The New Kids on the Block - The band, and the new Krushers players. Jiri Slegr, -4 and only 2 points in 11 games. Robert Reichel, 0 points in 11 games! Oates, 5 whopping points in 11 games and -3. I thought this guy was a brilliant 2-way player? These new additions need to make an impact fast, or else they will likely be traded or benched rather quickly. They are being counted on the make the Krushers into true contenders.

The Ugly:
Brett Hull's wife, yuk! It's no small wonder he sleeps around more than most players while on road trips.

For the Krushers, this is Paul Varelens.

Future Watch
From Marc Hebert with (quite a few) additions by Larry Berteotti

Hey guys, I'll try to make this a regular feature in the mag. Let me just say that I don't pretend to know everything on prospects, I'll even readily admit that I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys know more than I do. I'm just doing this for the fun of it... If anyone would like to lend a hand, maybe going over the article and adding to it, it would give more credibility to it to have two opinions on it rather than only one, so just let me know if you're interested.

This week, future watch is taking a look at the Krushers' organization. The Krushers are deep in the prospects area. Beech, Hrdina, Zednik, Vorobiev, Safranov, to name a few all have WHL potential.

Let's take a closer look at the Krushers' farm team:

Jan Hrdina: Future top 2 lines player, Hrdina has a nose for the net. He's got speed on his side, with a good pair of hands. Should be a steady 20+ goals scorer in a few season. Not only does he have the offensive capability Hrdina is also a defensive stalwart. If you are looking to compare him Jere Lehtinen is a good look into what Hrdina's future will hold if he continues to develop.

Kris Beech: Beech was rated 11th on the Hockey News' top 50 prospects list at the end of last season. Should become a good 2 way center, and possibly has 1st line upside. How long it will take is the main issue, Washington has the bad habit of slowing down a lot of prospects' development. Remember Jason Allison? He became an instant star the day he left Washinton for Boston. If indeed Beech is to become a first line centre he will need to add some upper body strength and about 20 pound of weight. He is a willowy young lad and could use an off season training program.

Richard Zednik: Steady second line performer potential, though in my humble opinion, playing in Washington is against him. He has a howitzer for a shot but doesn't use it often enough, is slightly injury prone and doesn't use his teammates well enough yet. He does have a little bit of a nasty streak in him which makes him unpredictable, not Nazarov unpredictable but he won't hesitate to give a nice whack if the situation calls for one.

Trevor Letowski: Another winger. Letowski has the potential to become a steady 20 goals, 50 points scorer. With Dallas Drake out for St-Louis, should get more ice time in Phoenix the season. He was once thought too small and not tough enough, but Letowski has changed some minds. He isn't a big man but he's fast and will do anything it takes to stick. His attitude and heart are what distinguish him from other more talented players. That is what will make him a fan favourite, I project him to be like Brian Skrudland.

Pavel Vorobiev: Yet, another winger, Vorobiev was ranked #1 amongst Europeans by CSB in 2000. Still very young, he has plenty of time to develop. Good puck handling and showed well at the WJC last year. He is a fairly consistent player and should make it to the WHL faster than some of those prospect picked ahead of him.

Kiril Safranov: Was a 1st round pick by Phoenix. Should become a steady defensive minded defenseman. Should crack the top 4 dmen.

Justin Williams: Currently playing for the Flyers after being drafted late in the 1st round in 2000. Should be sticking around even after the injured players come back. Needs to add weight and strength if he expects to last the full 82 game schedule. Was he overlooked at draft or has the real Justin Williams yet to show himself and not for the good?

Jan Lasak: ECHL Goalie of the year and ECHL Rookie of the Year...was also the goalie for Slovakia at the World Championships where he won the Silver medal. Good lateral movement with quick reflexes and a good glove hand. Relies on his reflex too much at times and doesn't cover the angles as well as he should but he is young and developing. He is also a fair stick handler.

The Krushers have a really good crop of prospects especially on the wings, which makes me think that it will be pretty hard to crack the Krushers' lineup if you're a winger 3-4 seasons from now.

Pierre.PNG
This week, Spotlight will focus on Pierre Turgeon.

Currently leading the WHL in points, Pierre is clearly the engine of the Chicoutimi Sparrows offense. Pierre was drafted 18th overall in the WHL Original Entry Draft by Chicoutimi. Clearly General Manager Mike Hebert considered Pierre's abilities to play as well as to lead when marking him as their #1 guy and making him the only captain in Sparrows history.

Pierre's history prior to the WHL is just as glorious. He was drafted 1st overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1987 Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Sabres in 1987-88, when he scored 14 goals and 28 assists in 76 games. In 1988-89, he tallied 34 goals and 54 assists through 80 contests. Pierre achieved his first 100-point season in 1989-90, scoring 40 goals and 66 assists in 80 games. He played in his first NHL All-Star Game in 1990. After eight games with Buffalo in 1991-92, Pierre finished the season with the New York Islanders. In 1992-93, he notched career-bests with 58 goals, 74 assists, 132 points, and 83 games, and played in his second NHL All-Star Game. In addition, he was awarded the 1993 Lady Byng Trophy. He returned to the NHL All-Star Game in 1994. After 34 games with the Islanders in 1994-95, he finished the year with the Montreal Canadiens. Pierre represented the Canadiens at the 1996 NHL All-Star Game, and went on to finish the 1995-96 season with 38 goals and 58 assists. On Oct. 29, 1996, he was traded with Rory Fitzpatrick and Craig Conroy to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Murray Baron, Shayne Corson, and a 1997 fifth round draft pick. In 1997-98, Pierre played in his 800th NHL game and scored his 900th NHL point. In 1998-99, Pierre scored 31 goals and added 34 assists while playing in 67 games for the Blues. During the 1999-2000 season, Pierre scored 26 goals and 40 assists in 52 games. He scored eight power play goals and four game-winners.

Pierre played two seasons with Granby of the QMJHL before making the jump into the  NHL. In 1985-86, he scored 47 goals and 67 assists in 69 games for the Bisons. He followed that up with career-bests in goals (69), assists (85), and points (154) in 1986-87.

In 1985-86, Pierre played 11 games for Team Canada, scoring two goals and four assists. In 1986-87, Pierre played in the World Junior Championships, scoring three goals in six games.

Pierre's brother, Sylvain, is a pro hockey forward for the Kassel Huskies of the Deutschen Eishockey Liga.

In the WHL his career has been just as phenomenal. His best year was 1997-98( WHL3) season where he scored 59 goals and 99 points and was awarded both the Hart Trophy (Co-Winner) and the Frank J. Selke Trophy as well as getting the 2nd team all-star placement. He has never scored less than 20 goals in a season in the WHL or less than 49 points. With all that, Pierre has been to only one All-Star game in 1999-2000 (WHL5) where his performance was anything but All-Star. During the three game competition he managed no points, only six shots and was a -3.

Pierre's playoff performance has usually been stellar. In 34 playoff games over four years he has 14 goals and 27 points. Oddly enough, his only bad playoff year was in 1997-98 (WHL3) after completing his best ever regular season he disappeared in the playoffs with no points in 4 games then getting injured. He missed the second round where the Sparrows were beaten four games to one.

Pierre is looking for a career year this season, and with 18 points in 10 games he might be on his way. The Sparrows are certainly looking to him for his leadership and his on-ice skills to take them further than just the second round of the playoffs.
