Players of the Week

The player of the week this time around is...Curtis Joseph of the Toronto Stallions who led his team to 4 wins with some amazing performances. The runner up was Trevor Linden of the Chicoutimi Sparrows.

Note: The Co-winner would have been Mats Sundin had anyone chosen to enter his name, however with submissions getting fewer and fewer I have decided that only players entered will now be considered for this honour. No offence to anyone but take 5 minutes to submit a line or two to the magazine and makes it worth reading.

This is getting old for everybody that isn't a Dropkicks fan. A hat trick in the
OT win vs the Vipers, the winner on the road versus the once feared Krushers. He's
got 20 goals in 19 games...anybody question coach Pat Langlois' decision to give
                 him the "C" now?

               Maxim Afinogenov     5   0   4    4  -3   0   0   0  0   12    0   0.0
The "poor man's Pavel Bure" label might be a bit premature, but there's no doubting
this sophomores contributions this year. He's racked up some points while playing
sound defence on a line with David Legwand and Mike Grier.

               Michal Grosek        5   1   2    3   2   0   0   1  0   12   17   8.3
Why GM Kordyback has been pitching the Czech to every GM in the league is a mystery
to me. He scored the OT winner vs the Vipers and has made contributions when it has
mattered. When Magnus Arvedson returns in a game or two he'll likely see less
ice time but one must be impressed with his attitude this year so far.

Toronto's Coach Speaks...
Toronto - This past week saw the Stallions go 4-1-0. With two home-at-home series, the first against the Lunatics that Toronto swept. Game one was a 6-3 victory, and game two was a 3-1 victory. Toronto outshot Waterloo 89-61 in the two games. Waterloo could only score on with the man advantage, and they did that well. Three of their 4 goals were on the power play and they scored them on ten chances. Toronto could only muster one power play goal on eleven chances.

The other home-at-home series was against rival Mississauga IceDogs. The series was split with each team winning one game at home by identical scores of 2-1. Toronto outshot the IceDogs 73-57 in the two games, and neither could do much with the man advantage. Toronto scored just two goals on 12 chances while Mississauga score two on 10 chances.

Toronto's other game was against the Saskatoon Enforcers. The Enforcers have struggled to keep their pace from last year, with a record of 9-11-5 in there first 25 games this year. Aside from Mikael Renberg, there is no offense from this team, and the defense has been sporadic at best. Toronto handily won the game 6-2.

This weeks extraordinary efforts came from Goaltender Curtis Joseph, who allowed only 9 goals over the five games, for a G.A.A. of 1.80 and a save percentage of 94.1%. He was Toronto's player of the week this week. Other efforts came from Zigmund Palffy(3g,2a,16shots) and Teppo Numminen(3g,2a,18s).

Toronto's next five games are against the Oakville Bulls, Mississauga Vipers, Almont Raiders and a home-at-home against the Halifax Hawks. A rather light schedule for the Stallions where coach Darryl Sittler is tinkering with the lines a little.

OAKVILLE NEWS
Oakville - The Bulls in the last 5 games are 2-2-1. This is a step forward from last week when the Bulls were still in the midst of their winless streak. Leading the charge this week is alternate captain Sandis Ozolinsh who is the team's Player-of-the-Week. Sandis has played smart hockey for the last week, and not only has he produced offensively, but he has made some great defensive plays. Runner up to Ozolinsh was Steve Yzerman and Ray Whitney who both have come on as of late.

The Bulls are involved in a several serious negotiations as of now, but have yet to pull the trigger. Scott Stevens was supposed to be shipped out last Friday to the Central Division, but the deal simply fell apart after being pretty much complete. Stevens is still demanding to be traded.

All of the rumors surrounding Mario Lemieux coming back to play at centre for the Bulls are heating up again with the constant trade talks by GM Chris Kubinec. Only time will tell what will happen with Mario's status as the Bulls head coach.

Trade Rumours Abound
New England - New England's worst kept secret is that the Dropkicks are trying to re-acquire Jeff Friesen from the Hamilton Steelcats. Friesen has been watching from the press box for the past few weeks, and Kordyback and Larry Steelcats have haggled back and forth the whole time. The word on the street is that Mr. Steelcats wants Dany Heatley and or David Legwand in return.

Other sources claim that Friesen is on his way to another Western team. We'll wait and see.
Random 'Kicks
Watch for the new Brian Howe Christmas album to hit shelves this week.

"A Very Liberal Christmas" features Howe and his favorite Liberal MPs joining up for 12 holiday gems such as "I Saw Mommy Kissing Sanderson" with Sheila Copps and "Tobin the Blowman" with the man from the rock himself providing some tra-la-las.

This is expected to net Howe some $1.7 million dollars in sales in Ontario alone...proving once again that the people from that province will gladly buy any crap that the Liberal party throws at them time and time again.

All's Quiet on the Western Front
Victoria - The Victoria Islanders have diddly to report. After stopping a 10 game winless streak our hero prefers to remain anonymous. Our last heroes, Yzerman and Yushkevich, were quickly dispatched and no one stepped forward this week. GM Dave MacDougall said that does it for players with the last name starting with a Y and a random draw for another letter of the alphabet will take place next week.

News from da Dog Pound
Mississauga -     It's been a busy little while in the WHL.  The Icedogs over the last 5 games have a record of 4 wins and 1 loss.  The Dogs played there most hated rival the Toronto Stallions in a home and home series,  the two teams split the series each winning one game at home.  These two games show that the Icedogs can play with the best in the WHL and have a chance at doing some damage in the playoffs.  There were no verbal jabs between the two teams before or after the games.  But this reporter is still wondering where Domi is?  In some big news Mario Lemieux the head coach of the Oakville Bulls has said he's considering a comeback to the WHL.  It has been heard that he is not happy with owner Chris Kubinec or his players.  I heard from a source that he thinks that his players are heartless and should be playing hockey out west, with one of those jokes or teams out there.  It is also rumoured that Owner Jon Lemoine of the Icedogs has been talking to Mario about the possibility of him coming to play for the Icedogs.  Niether Mario or Lemoine could be reached for comment on these talks.  In other News out of Mississauga the Icedogs are looking to deal Olaf Kolzig and possible Brad Isbister who has been struggling so far this year.  In 25 games Isbister hasn't scored a goal yet.  he has notched 16 assists but hasn't managed to put a puck in the back of the net.  The Icedogs next five games are against the Express, Enforcers, Lunatics, Lunatics, and Endless.  The Icedogs are hoping to take 10 points in this 5 game series.  Joe Nieuwendyk is expected back in the lineup for the first of two against the Lunatics and should be reunited on a line with Patrik Elias and Steve Thomas.

MIAMI HERALD
Miami - The Miami OCEANICS almost claimed the second spot in their division but lost to the lowly Hawks in what could be their worst season effort. Pyatt was the only player to show heart and that he is a serious contender for rookie of the year as he notched a hat trick.

Considering everything the OCEANICS are having an outstanding year and have outsider chances for the play-offs where they hopefully play the Hartford DROPKICKS, a team even though much stronger on the paper it has always had difficulties playing against the OCEANICS.

The most outstanding thing about the OCEANICS is that on their pro team is NONE natural RW but the team keeps on winning. The lines are juggled back and forth and just seem to click as Schaefer and Koltsov fill in admiringly on those positions. Beezer is sharper than ever and with Nabokov a great goaltender is ready to keep up the tradition.

there is more to come from the OCEANICS....

Prospect Report for the Hamilton Steelcats
By Larry Berteotti

The Steelcats have a plethora of young prospects in their system, possible the best youth of any team in the WHL along with the Vikings. We will exams the Steelcat prospects and make a projection on where they will fit in, in todays WHL.

Nikolai Antropov - The Steelcats need this 6 foot 5 inch youngster to add weight and become the number one centre the team so desperately needs. The knock against him was that he was a poor skater, some experts think that this was a ploy by the Russia Ice Hockey Federation to keep Antropov in Europe. Though he is a little easy to knock off the puck at times. But he has a great touch.
PROJECTION: Likely scoring #2 centre with outside chance at #1

Marty Reasoner - Another excellent candidate to be the #1 centre that the Cats need but alas the shine on his star is taking to much effort to keep up. He has tailed off after making some appearances for the team last year. Solid on both sides of the puck but is prone to inconsistency. He is an alright skater but with a choppy stride. He needs more upper body strength to shrug off the WHL checking.
PROJECTION: Number two centre.

Mike Fisher - Fisher is yet another of Hamilton top young talents at centre. This team has tried to pick up every centre prospect on earth it seems. Fisher is a small quick skater, good overall skills and passing. He isn't Theo Fleury but he is a tough youngster for his size. I don't know if he will every be more than a #3 but it won't be from lack of trying.
PROJECTION: Number three centre.

Steve Begin - One word TOUGH. He is an agitator extraordinaire. There is no mistake about his potential he is a number 3 checking centre. No offensive upside to this lad but like Fisher he will give you everything he's got. One thing against him is his size, his biggest advantage puck pursuit he just never say die.
PROJECTION: Depth player

Blair Betts - Probably the best 3rd line centre among the three which would include Fisher and Begin. Betts played on Canadas entry in the WJC but blew out his knee. That has been Betts biggest problem has been his inability to stay healthy. He is a decent size with good skating ability. He has a laser beam for a shot and has a well rounded finesse game as well. HE could be the total package but it will take some time to develop due to all the lost time because of injuries when he was in the minors.
PROJECTION: Could be a #2 centre but more likely #3

Petr Schastlivy - He was the Cat's first round pick this season and was kind of a surprise to go in the first round but the team is confidence in this young Euro Imports offensive prowess. Schastlivy is shift and fast along the same lines as a Val Bure (when he wants to play). He has a good nose for the net and a lightning quick release. The biggest problem for Petr is the glut of young LWer in the Cat organization. His role will be that of a first line scoring LW though Jeff Friesen, Oleg Saprykin, Alex Tanguay and Andrew Brunette are all ahead of him on the depth chart. The rumoured availability of Friesen in a trade could bump him up a spot which would put him on the big clubs roster as early as next season.
PROJECTION: First line score LWer.

Jeff Heerema - Jeff is on his third season with the Cats coming out of junior. He has some great ability and could be a key player on RW in the future but he needs more strength in both his upper body and in his legs. He is a tall willowy player who will try and muck it up but really can't. Some off season weight training would go along way.
PROJECTION: Depth player

Jochen Hecht - Jochen could be a very good power forward for the Cats. He is big strong and has all the requisite tools to be an effective WHL player. He has gotten the occasional recall from the parent club but has seen limited duty while up. Hecht is a poor mans Cam Neely and the team will give him all the time he needs to develop.
PROJECTION: First line power forward.

Shane Willis - The book on Shane Willis is that he is an offensive threat. He has great on ice vision and uses his team mates well. He went to the memorial cup with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, playing with fellow WHLers Chris Phillips and Byron Richie. He plays more like a centre when he is on the ice, he likes to control the puck and dictate where the play and flow of the game are going. He was an excellent pick up for the Steelcats.
PROJECTION - Second line scoring winger.

Scott Parker - There is only one thing you can call Scott Parker "tough". This kid is absolutely huge he looks like he has two jerseys sewn together just to get one to fit. He will be the teams resident tough guy and will be part of the elite at what he does. He has some offensive upside though nothing substantial. On defense he is a good enough skater that he doesn't hurt your team though you wouldn't put him out on the ice in the final minutes.
PROJECTION - Enforcer/Depth player

Brian Campbell - If there is one area the Cats lack prospects in it is on defence though they do have a lot of youth on the parent club. Phil Housley isn't one of them and will likely be moved or retire at the end of the season. Don't fear, the Steelcats have another power play quarterback in the minors. Brian Campbell is a quick effortless skater and has uncanny on ice vision. He can see the play develop well ahead of him and will throw tape to tape passes to streaking forwards. He isn't big so he could hurt your team defensively but it is balanced out by his tremendous offensive potential.
PROJECTION: PP Quarterback/ #3 or #4 dman.

Brent Krahn - Krahn is big for a goalie and covers his net well. If looks unorthodox at times which is just the influence Dominik Hasek has had on the game. He has good reflexes and comes out to challenge the shooters. This kid is a WHL goalie in a couple years, he isn't Luongo but I pity the WHL when the Cats have Luongo and Krahn as his back up. If he has one downside to his game it is that he doesn't handle the puck well. This is a problem he has mitigated by trying to handle it as little as necessary.
PROJECTION: First string goalie

Robert Esche - He will be a solid backup somewhere in the WHL in the next couple of years but likely not for the Cats. He has had a tremendous season so far in the WHL and has taken over the #1 duties on the farm. He is agile with extremely quick lateral movement. He covers his angles well and handles the puck reasonable well.
PROJECTION - Backup goalie.
