WHL WEEKLY VOL.2, number 6 Here it is, another edition of the WHL Weekly Magazine. You waited long for this but it was worth it. It's a very big issue this week, because of the NEW RULES section, a MUST READ, and the excellent job done by our reporter Mr. Jason Stumpf. CONTENTS: 1- Overall team stats 2- Rookie report 3- Player of the week 4- Goaltender of the week 5- Weekly trades 6- Trading blocks 7- Team's trading - by Michael Hebert 8- New rules - from Micheal Hebert and Darren Kinnaird 9- Interview with GM Lori Steward of the Norsemen - by Jason Stumpf 10- Quotes - by Jason Stumpf 11- Have a good day - from Jason Stumpf 1- OVERALL TEAM STATS: The teams are ranked primarily by the percentage, and then, in case of a tie, by the number of wins, and finally, in case of another tie, by the difference between the GF and GA. I had some problems with the mail I was keeping in my folders since it was all deleted when my server was replaced so, the hot/not section is for days 16 to 30. The Lunatics are very hot, and are now leading the league. It's not getting better, it is getting worse. Come on people, take 5 minutes of your time to tell me who was good on your team and who was not. Some players had tremendous weeks but since nobody told me, their performances went unnoticed. Pat Lafontaine of the Lunatics is our player of the week. In the last ten, he scored 6 goals, adding 12 assists for a total of 18 points, helping the Lunatics to a very good record this week. Teammate Jeff Shevalier, Joe Nieuwendyk, and Mats Sundin of the Corinthians, Rick Tocchett of the Sparrows, and Doug Gilnour of the Warriors were the runners up. RETIREMENT -Current procedure 1. a. Players from the ages of 17-30 have a 100% chance of returning for the following year. b. Players between the ages of 30 to 34 lose 5% off of their percentage chance of returning for the following year. c. Players between 35-38 years of age lose a 10% chance of returning for the following year. d. And; players between the ages of 38-40 lose 20% chance of returning for the following year. 2. The decision for retirement will be decided upon by a random number selection by the Commissioner. The random number will be between 1-100 and will be decided upon by a computer program. If the random number is higher than the player's chance of returning to the league then the player will retire. -Maximum number of players retiring per team is 3. If more than 3 players have to retire, only the 3 older will retire. -GMs have the power to retire players over 30 in their team after the season. 2. RERATING 2.1 General Rerating The following procedure will be followed when the time for rerating comes (during the off-season). Criteria Factors #pla. effect Pro/Fa Method Range ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Young Player NHL, age 4 up both Tim Chan's rat. +15 Performance WHL, luck 2 up/down Pro *to be determined* Random luck, age 2 up/down both Current Plan +3/-3 The current plan is annexed at the end of ths message. Notes: 1.For the Y. Player Criteria, players are chosen by the GM, and must be 25 or under. Also, a maximum of 2 players who have played at least 15 games in the WHL (2 Pro players). 2.For the Performance Criteria, players must have played at least 15 games the previous season to be eligible. 3.Players can't be rerated twice: if a player gets rerated, he isn't eligible for the next Criteria. 4.The Criterium will be done in the same order as above: Y. Player first, then Performance, and finally Random. 5.By the time the current youngest player in the WHL turns 25 the Timothy Chan system will no longer be used in the WHL as there will no one left to rerate under that system. 6.In Y. Player Criteria any player with a current rating under 50 is unlimited in his ratings increase. 2.2 Draftees Rerating This procedure will apply to new draftees entering the league as of the WHL second entry draft that will take place in Edmonton next summer. Players who go thru this rerating procedure will not be eligible for rerating under the Timothy Chan system. All players drafted from now on will go thru this system. Players available for the draft will be given a "potential score". It will be out of 50 and it will express what we feel will be the players future potential. It will be based on the players Junior stats and/or NHL stats in the case that the player is already a member of the NHL. The players list and their original "ratings" will be made by the Director of Player Personel and Rerating, with the help of the Commissioner. All new players will be given ratings over the 11 categories of a minimum of 25 and no maximum. You can expect the best players to be rated around 65. Goaltenders will have no maximum and minimum of 12 (but don't expect to draft a goalie rated higher than 60). Players with the highest ratings won't necessarily have the best potential. There will be all kinds of players available: higher ratings with lower potential (most likely players who already made it in the NHL), and lower ratings with higher potential (most likely junior players). At the mid point of season, end of season and at mid point of following season, the young draftees will be rerated by rolling a six sided dice 10 times. You multiply that number by their "potential score" and compare it to the chart below: Goalies points added on will be the chart points minus 2. 3000-2800=15 points 2799-2600=14 2599-2400=13 2399-2200=12 2199-2000=11 1999-1800=10 1799-1600=9 1599-1400=8 1399-1200=7 1199-1000=6 999-800=5 799-600=4 599-400=3 399-200=2 under 199=1 Their points will be added on as follows. Their highest number gets added to first from left to right. For example. If we look at Joe Thorton, who is currently ranked number one by central scouting, we would assume Joe is given a "potential score" of 50. His ratings may be as follows: 4 6 4 5 5 5 6 6 5 4 5 =55 A roll of 30 comes up at the mid point of first year. That would result in a 1500 on the chart. He would recieve 8 points for this. His new ratings would be: 4 7 4 6 6 6 7 7 6 4 6 =63 Then at the next rerating we would go where we left off from. Let's say that he gets 12 points. He would now be: 5 8 5 7 7 7 8 8 7 6 7 =75 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This procedure will ensure that a newly drafted player can't be a superstar in his first year (he probably won't even be able to make the team), but gets a chance to improve gradually, which is realistic. If anyone has any questions about this please direct them to myself. I can be reached at kinnaird@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca ********************** H. RERATING PLAYERS ********************** After the end of the Playoffs and before the next season's entry draft, the following rerating scheme will be used: 1. For each Pro Team, randomly select 2 players and find out their age. 2. Using a random number and the rerating table, find out by how many points each selected players improve. 3. Using random numbers, select the categories for the improvement points. Today on the BROTHER LOVE show I have for you SISTER LORI for the Norsemen. Lori and I had some time to chat and this is what we had to say. 1) How does it feel to be the first female gm in the WHL? A) I suppose that I could say that I am proud to be breaking new turf for women everywhere by inching my way into a predominantly male world, thus opening new opportunities and dispelling out-dated gender-based stereotypes, but the truth is; I don't believe that being female makes any real difference. I have always been a bit of a tom-boy, and I feel much more comfortable in a group of men than in a group of women. Besides, in some cases, being a female has its advantages, I'm not sure that using my womenly wiles would go over as well were I male! :) 2) Your current team the Norsemen are currently tied for the third worst record in the league. How do you feel about your team and their lack of success and their possible future success? A) I am a bit dissappointed with the Norsemen so far this season. However, I believe that we are only going to improve as the season progresses. We won our last two games, are equal to the Wolves, and have moved ahead of the Agents in our division. Our early lack of success is due largely in part to my inexperience, and the fact that many of my players were not playing up to their potential. 3) Some of the GM'S in the WHL do not beleive that you are a good enough GM, what do you, THE BEST FEMALE GM IN THE WORLD!!! have to say to those critics out there? A) WHICH GM'S!??!! All I can say to that is bring 'em on!! I have confidence in my Norsemen, they have tasted victory, and they want to WIN! Bring 'em on! We'll settle our differences on the ice; they'll see that it's no small thing to go up against the BEST FEMALE GM IN THE WORLD!!! 4) Your team is currently the 3rd worst team on the penalty kill but your team takes the 5th least penalties. Do you beleive this is because of your style of play, the female beleif of stylish and fancy skating rather then the crash and bang style, the Elvis Stojko style of skating rather then the Eric Lindros style? A) I freely admit that I do not condone a violent style of play. I ask my players to avoid penalties whenever possible. It is my philosophy that a player who is sitting in the penalty box is not scoring any goals. However, I think that my players would be upset (with reason) if they were compared to either Elvis Stojko or Eric Lindros. We try to obtain a style of our own somewhere between the two (although having Lindros' butt wouldn't be so bad; it is extremely well formed! :-) ) 5) How do you feel about the lack of production by all star defenseman Gary Galley and goalie Ron Hextall? Both have the talent to be the best in the league, yet they aren't playing up to their potential. Are the rumors floating around the league about them being traded true? A) Ron Hextall has a reputation of being a bit of a hot-head. He has an extremely short temper, and often finds himself in delicate situations (to say the least). Since being traded to the Norsemen from the Flaming Fish, he has had to go through a period of transition, but I think that he has finally adjusted to our gentler style of play, and I am confident that he will shine for the Norsemen. As for Gary Galley, he has been on a prolongued slump. Of course I am disappointed with his performance (or lack thereof), but I tell myself that his is not a permanent condition. He has been allowing personal problems to cloud his judgements, and this in turn is interfering with his career. I have been obliged to keep him out of the lineup, but am optimistic that this situation will soon right itself. All rumors of a trade involving either of these two players are false. Well folks, that is all for today from the BROTHER LOVE show. I hope you all enjoyed our little talk with SISTER LORI. Next week I will talking to one of our BROTHERS out there in the WHL. So until then...... I LOVE YOU! 10- PENALTY BOX: - by Jason Stumpf BROTHERS AND SISTERS, here is what some of you had to say to BROTHER LOVE this past week: ************************************************************************ Brother Love would like to now how do you(Lars) feel about the play of Ken Baumgarnter, 13 points in 26 games, that is amazing for a man like him and I want to know how you feel. "I have no words for that ......." -LARS ************************************************************************ Brother Love would like to know how you(Michael) feel about the play of power forward Rick Tocchet who currently has 31 points and 81 penalty mintues in 26 games. "Tocchet is awesome this year. He really is a leader for the Sparrows. He's not afraid of anything and he's there every night. He's the kind of player every team would want." -MICHAEL ************************************************************************ Brother Love would like to know how you (Capn) feel about the play of Paul Kruse with 83 penalty minutes in 23 games. Kruser has been slacking off his duties as an enforcer, ever since his recent Marriage to TSN reporter Teresa Hergert. We've cut him a little slack because he is still on his honeymoon...but it is time that he started pulling his weight! Some of the guys have been kidding him about his wife not having a nose, (if you have ever seen her side-on you'd really notice it)...and we figure that it might get him fired-up a bit more. 83 minutes in penalties might be good on some OTHER team, but when you are a GRUNT, we expect you to play agressively all the time. Tie Domi is begining to complain that he should be getting some of Kruser's ice time...as he thinks he could do more damage. As coach, I am considering putting them on the same line. -CAPN DAVE ************************************************************************ Brother Love would like to know how you(Shaun Driver) feel about Dave Karpa's play with 102 penalty minutes in 20 games. "You have to love the guy he knows his role and DAMN does he make heads roll!" -SHAUN ************************************************************************ Brother Love would like to know how you(Kevin Beilner) feel about the amazing play of Dominic Hasek with a 2.79 GOA and a .902 PCT in one line or less.
