Playing well in the first game he took Karpotsevs place as 6th defender. and a game later he was playing in the second line and on the power play as well. This year will be his last year, and he wants to go out with style. While the Enforcers are certin to miss the playoffs Kasatonov want to help his club and set a good example for the many young defenders who will fight for making the team next year. Vikings News and Notes ---------------------- Things have not gone smoothly in Edmonton yet this year and with the team hovering at a game over .500 team captain Eric Desjardins called a players-only meeting. "What was said in the room stays there," Desjardins said, "No one has really played as well as they can with the exception of James Gang (goaltender Jamie Storr) and I just wanted to sort out if there was any problems between the guys." This adds fuel to the rumor that defenceman Sylvain Cote was a disruptive influence in the dressing room and was traded because of that. "Not even close to true," GM Lee McEwen replied. "I made the trade because of on-ice abilities both in the short and long term, not because of anyone's attitude. Everyone's just frustrated right now as we are obviously playing beneath our abilities. Our defence and goaltending is playing well but we aren't scoring which is the last problem I thought we'd have. I'm not really worried because talent will always come around. The fundamentals have been there which is the most important. The scorers will score soon enough." Rookie RW'er Sergei Berezin has found himself in the press box the last three games after managing only three assists in his first fifteen games. Fellow rookie Steve Kelly took his place in the line-up and has played well though unspectacularly. Both McEwen and Moelleken seem disenchanted with Berezin and it is a safe bet that he is available in a trade. Veteran d-man Brian Benning who came over from the Stallions in the off-season and has been playing in Saskatoon for the Vikings top farm affiliate has looked good in early action and is leading all defensemen in scoring with 5 goals and 14 assists in only 12 games. Look for him to rejoin the Vikings at any time. Jim Matheson for the WHL Weekly the VOODOO ---------- Things look they are finnally settled in Vancouver. Ryan Smyth and Robert Svhela were shipped out for Brian Leetch. Vancouver had been shopping Ryan Smyth for many days now and finally got something done.
