OffSides (The Official Magazine of the WHL) ------------------------------------------ Editor's Note ----------------- I just want to pass congragulations on to Jeff Tetz and the Penticton Venom for their surprising Cyber Cup victory. It just goes to show you that the only time it really matters is playoff time. I also want to thank the regualr contributors to OffSides like Jes Golbez, Brian Howe and Mike Hebert. They make my job alot easier. Of course I also want to thank the other GM"s in the league who contribute occasionally to the magazine but contribute regularly to the league. In my opinion the WHL is the best fantasy-league on the internet and it's the GMs who make it that. Right now there are some strong opinions being exchanged about the future of the WHL and I think it is important to realize that just because someone doesn't necessarily agree with you, it does not make them wrong. The important thing is that we thoughtfully exchange ideas and accept the decisions that are made. Obviously it is impossible to please every team when changing the focus of the league but whatever happens must be dealt with. WHL Awards ----------------- Hart Trophy - Alexei Zhamnov, Chicoutimi Sparrows. In his first year with the Sparrows, Zhamnov rediscovered his scoring touch from his days in Edmonton. He finished second in league scoring with 112 points and led the Sparrows to a .608 winning percentage. "This is great honor. I knew coming over to Chicoutimi was new beginning, and I just did my best to help the team. They even made me take French lessons because city is almost 100% french speaking. And a lot of the players are too. I enjoyed it and hope to do it again next season. Thanks." Norris Trophy - Raymond Bourque, Surrey Strangers - It is hard to believe that Borque is as old as he is. His 88 points led all defensemen in scoring and he finished at an astouding +85. Vezina Trophy - Patrick Roy, Waterloo Lunatics - All he did was lead the league in goals against average and save percentage. He also won 32 games and finished with 3 shutouts. Calder Trophy - Nick Boynton, Kingston Corinthians - When he wasn't getting arrested for accosting taxi drivers with his buddy Mark Bell, a Hamilton Steelcats prospect, Boynton was establishing himself as a premier defensemen in the WHL. He stepped in and became the #1 defenseman on a very good Kingston Corinthians team and looks to have a very successful career ahead of him. Selke Trophy - Jeremy Roenick, Chi-Town Krushers - JR has re-established himself as a dominant 2-way player and his 8 shorthanded goals led the league. A ferocious competitor at both ends of the ice, Roenick scored and shut down other top scorers all season long. Lady Byng Trophy - Steve Rucchin, Seattle Saints - A consumate sportsman, Rucchin quietly went about his business in Seattle this season as he scored 16 goals while only accumulating 16 penalty minutes. "This is an absolutely huge surprise. I was honored just to get nominated, I never thought I could actually win. We had a tough year in Seattle and I want to promise the fans that things will get better. I'd also like to congragulate the Venom on a hard-fought Cyber Cup victory and give my best to all the nominees and winners here. Thanks." Masterton Trophy - Lee McEwen, Edmonton Vikings "This is an award that I would like to share with the other finalists, Mike and Brian, as well as some other GM's in the league. One guy can't make a difference and what makes this league work is the hard work of the whole lot of you. A special thanks to the commissioner though, who makes everything possible, even a Venom championship......I mean can you actually believe that shit? Thanks." Adams Trophy - Doug MacLean, Chi-Town Krushers - MacLean led the Krushers back into the playoffs and the Norris Division title. He changed the style of the Krushers and the results were available almost immediately. The goaltending and the team defense improved ten-fold and the Krushers became very tough to play against. Executive of the Year - Marc Hebert, Kingston Corinthians - The acquisition of Jaromir Jagr took the Corinthains into the next stratosphere offensively and led them to the Cyber Cup finals. Hebert also made several other changes that kept the Corinthians at the top of the standings all year long. WHL All-Star Teams --------------------------- 1st Team Goalie - Patrick Roy, Waterloo Lunatics Defense - Darryl Sydor, Edmonton Vikings Defense - Raymond Bourque, Surrey Strangers Left Wing - Paul Kariya, Vancouver Voodoo Right Wing - Jaromir Jagr, Kingston Corinthians Centre - Mark Messier, Surrey Strangers 2nd Team Goalie - Martin Brodeur, Hamilton Steelcats Defense - Nicklas Lidstrom, Vancouver Voodoo Defense - Rob Blake, Chi-Town Krushers Left Wing - Keith Tkachuk, Kingston Corinthians Right Wing - Theoren Fleury, Surrey Strangers Centre - Alexei Zhamnov, Chicoutimi Sparrows All-Rookie Team Goalie - Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Voodoo Defense - Nick Boynton, Kingston Corinthians Defense - Tom Poti, Hartford Dropkicks Forward - Josh Holden, Hamilton Steelcats Forward - Mike Johnson, Southampton Seagulls Forward - Olli Jokinen, Des Moines Dominators Team News --------------- Waterloo Lunatics ----------------------- Stumpf Praises Roy WATERLOO - Even after being eliminated in fourth straight games in the playoffs, The Waterloo Lunatics continued to praise All-Star goaltender Patrick Roy on his superb play through the entire season. Last season, Roy was caught in a goaltending controversy as he battled with Jocelyn Thibault for the #1 spot. After Thibault went down early in the season with an injury, Roy stepped up and stole the #1 spot away from Thibault and after playing 57 games, Roy posted the League's Best Goals Against Average with 2.76, had the 4th most wins with 32 wins, once again had the league's best Save Percentage at .905 and was tied for 4th with 3 shutouts. GM Jason Stumpf had these words... "What can I say, Roy was our team's MVP this season and he should be recognized for that. Hell, he put up numbers this season that should have had him recognized as the League's MVP. The team, the entire season played up and down. Nobody seem to click and they never played like a team, they never played together and each and every time they screwed up, Patrick was there to save them. I don't have to say much, just look at his numbers. He had the best Goals Against Average and Save Percentage in the league and he was on the leader board for wins and shut outs. He played phenomenal and in my opinion, there should be no doubt who the best goalie in the WHL this season was, it was Patrick Roy!" Des Moines Dominators ------------------------------ DOMINATORS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT NEW SEASON DES MOINES (AP)~ The Des Moines Dominators have there work cut out for them this season. They missed the playoffs badly last season and are not ready to do that again this season. The Dominators have a good core of young players but may be to young to pose any threat to a team. At center they have Joe Thornton and Olli Jokinen who will man the number one and two spots respectively. Bob Corkum will more than likely get the nod for the number three spot but look for Simon Gagne to take a shot at that by mid-season. Rick Girard, Mike Stapleton and Artem Chubarov round out the rest of the center spot but look for one if not two of them to be traded. Thornton and Jokinen are not on the trading block and will more than likely never be. On the left side they are full of vetern players. Darren Turcotte, Bob Bassen, Steve Thomas and Dave Reid are very solid players but the man who will be looked to to take the reigns is Patrik Elias. Elias will stay in a Dominators uniform but the other four players will be seeking work elsewhere and GM Jason Kolsrud is going to try and accomodate them on that. On the right side they are in the same boat as the left side. A few vetern players, Brett Hull, Nelson Emerson and Joe Sacco but Glen Murray will be looked at to take the number one slot on the right side. Ty Jones will also be getting a shot to make the lineup after a solid year in the minors. They also have Johan Lindbom, Per Eklund, Stefan Ustorf and Brad Smyth in the minors who will also be pushing for a shot on the big team. Hull, Emerson, Sacco and Rob Gaudreau will all be on the trading block as they want a shot on a more vetern type team. On defense is where the Dominators are very, very young. Manned by Paul Mara and Remi Royer this is where Kolsrud thinks the team lacks that vetern leadership. Mario Larocque, Aaron Ward, Jeff Brown II, Sean Gagnon and Darren VanImpe round out the rest of the starting defense but don't look for all of them to be in a Dominators uniform by the start of the season. Kolsrud will be actively looking for a veteran number one and possibly number two Dman to help out the youngsters. In net the Dominators are pretty young as well with Mike Dunham and Patrick DesRochers as two of their three goalies. The third goalie is Mike Richter but he may not see alot of time in net and will more than likely be moved to another team. Dunham may also be moved but that will purely depend on the advancement of DesRochers. The Dominators will need to make some major changes to get back to where they were the first season Kolsrud took over and that was in the Cyber Cup finals. Kolsrud balked at quite a few deals last season but don't look for him to balk so much this season. League News ----------------- League Announce Rule Change --------------------------- The WHL Offices announced today a couple changes in the way the Special Free Agent Draft will be proceeding. -reverse standings will be used to determine draft order instead of random draw (objective: help poor teams) -there *could* be 2 rounds instead of 1 if there is really a huge number of players available ****************************** L. SPECIAL FREE AGENT DRAFT ****************************** 1. Every player who has been selected for retirement from the WHL but has played at least one game in the NHL in the previous season is eligible for the Special Free Agent Draft. However, if a player has publicly announced his retirement from hockey he won't be eligible. 2. Every eligible player is rerated using the new WHL Ratings. 3. If less than 24 players are eligible, the 8 teams non-playoffs are assured of a pick, and the remaining teams to take part in the draft are randomly selected. 4. The Special Free Agent Draft most likely consists of one round. Depending on the number of players available, there might be a second round added. 5. The order is reverse regular season overall standings order. 6. All picks are non tradable. 7. The players who aren't selected retire. 8. This is where players making a comeback after retiring from the WHL in a previous season will go as well, instead of going into the Entry Draft. 9. The players selected in the Special Free Agent Draft are automatically protected from retirement the following season. WFHL Announcement ----------------- The WFHL Office announced today that six teams have reached an agreement for their farm affiliate to be part of the WFHL for the upcoming WFHL3 season. Five of these teams already have a successful WFHL team this year: the Sparrows (Farmers), Corinthians (Blizzard), Stallions (Riverrats), Grunts (Berserk) and Krushers (Shock). The 6th confirmed team is the Tampere Tappara (formerly Philadelphia Freeze), who will get a brand new WFHL franchise. This leaves 6 open spots, with many teams still looking to reach an agreement. DRAFT PREVIEW - NEEDS BY TEAM ============================= -contributed by Jes Golbez (Neinhalt Sieger) - Even though most WHL General Managers tell you that the best and only draft strategy is to draft the best player available, most teams will try and fill their biggest needs through the draft. In this article, I will outline the needs of each team going into the draft. SOUTHHAMPTION SEAGULLS: With the 1st overall pick and the 6th overall pick, the Seagulls are likely to take forwards, but its the defense which needs the most help. Martin Skoula and Dmitri Kalinen are solid prospects, but the defense corps needs help in every way possible. Goaltending in the organization is also weak and the Seagulls may look to draft Brian Finley with one of their picks. MONTREAL JUGGERNAUGHTS: They have the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th picks overall, and could very well draft the Sedin brothers. This would be the best possible scenario, as the Montreal Juggernaughts need a marketing dtool after a horrible season. This team is in need of prime time forwards, which is what they will likely pick. Stefan or Henrik Sedin will provide the #1 center this team will need. MISSISSAUGA VIPERS: Picking 5th, the Vipers could pick Finley and look to fill their #1 goalie spot, which is the cornerstone they need. They will also need to bolster a weak defense, and add some skilled forwards to the mix. SEATTLE SAINTS: After a very dissapointing season, the Saints will pick 7th overall. The organization has no glaring needs in their system, but drafting a bonafide goal-scoring type is just what they need. None of their current prospects or players can be considered a CRUNCH-TIME threat. SASKATOON ENFORCERS: Picking 8th overall, the Enforcers need help everywhere except at defense. ST. JOHN'S GRUNTS: The Grunts have the 9th overall pick and need help everywhere as the Grunts are an old team without a star player. The Grunts could try and move up on draft day. MISSISSAUGA ICEDOGS: Picking 10th, and then 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th, the IceDogs are an old team going nowhere. This draft will surely stock them all around for the future. Goaltending remains the organization's only strength. WATERLOO LUNATICS: A great defensive team, they will have to face the possible loss of UFA's Wayne Gretzky and Chris Chelios, if so, the team will be sorely lacking a stud defenseman and a playmaking center. Very thin current prospect pool as team has been gunning for it now. TAPPARA TAMPERE: Formerly the Freeze, Tappara will need help at every position and may hope Finnish prospect Jani Rita can last until the 11th pick, which is very likely. VANCOUVER VOODOO: Besides some heart, character, and a new coach, the only thing this organization needs is for their GM to stop wearing sandals and Hawaiian T-Shirts. With the 12th pick, they will add another quality prospect to their organization. RAINBOW LAKE FROSTBITE: Goaltending is strong, but this team has been shopping around their pick. Look for them to take the best player available, as both forward and defense need help. SPOKANE CHIEFS: Defense corps and goaltending are very strong. Look for them to go after help at Center. EDMONTON VIKINGS: Edmonton has been actively shopping this pick around, looking for help on a weak left wing. CHI-TOWN KRUSHERS: The team looks strong all around, but has very little prospect depth. GM Golbez will most likely look to get forwards in the draft, after going defense crazy last year with Allen, Gill, and Chara. SURREY STRANGERS: This team is old and has very little prospect depth for obvious reasons. Lots of free agents will leave and moving to Jasper will mean less income. GM Pongratz has never liked the draft and will probably leave it up to his coaches and scouts to pick for him. HALIFAX HAWKS: What can you say...they traded their 1st round pick (2nd overall) away and their 2nd round pick as well. Their top pick isn't until #47 and the only area that doesn't need lots of help would be the centers. Look for them to draft a goalie as Rolosan won't do it for them. HARTFORD DROPKICKS: They don't pick for the first 2 rounds, but last year they stocked up on quality prospects all around. Another young goaltender couldn't hurt. Look for GM Kordyback to offer a draft pick for some of Golbez's ex-girlfriend's phone numbers. PENTICTON VENOM: Cyber Cup Champions will be celebrating and too drunk to realize that they need a young goaltender to develop as Brathwaite won't do as #3. TORONTO STALLIONS: No weaknesses at all. Look for them to go for a defenseman, just because Stone Cold said so. PITTSBURGH QUAKERS: The Quakers are weak in scoring wingers and need an apprentice goaltender as well. Look for them to draft a speedy winger in the tradition of their team style. KINGSTON CORINTHIANS: The organization is very weak at Left Wing, but is more likely to trade for help than expect the draft to help. They are also looking to possibly deal their picks. CHICOUTIMI SPARROWS: I bet $10 they draft all French guys (RIBBIT). DES MOINES DOMINATORS: Stacked with young talent at every position after trading and drafting last season, they have no immediate needs. HAMILTON STEELCATS: Like the Dominators, they drafted strong 2 years in a row and have no immediate needs. Trivia ------ Question: Four players in WHL history have won the Cyber Cup twice, and all 4 are on the current Venom champion team. Who are the 4 players? Answer: Petr Nedved, Philippe Boucher and Brendan Witt played on the WHL2 Cup Champions Corinthians team. Stephane Fiset was also on the Corinthians pro team, although he didn't get any action during the playoffs. Another player, Jim Campbell, was owned by the Corinthians at that time (on the farm), but therefore didn't have any part in their victory. Thanks to Lee and Jason who took time to actually do some research to try and find the answers. As usual everything needed is on the site. Thanks also to Rick for submitting a "wild guess".
