Offsides: The Official Magazine of the WHL Commissioner's Note ------------------- The league announced today that they will pay $3 off the price of Platinum Computing Systems' Line Maker III Software, for any WHL GM or Coach wishing to acquire the software. The software is designed to assist coaches in managing their team, keeping track of their lines and performing other related duties. The announcement was made after a reported incident involving the league and Platinum Computing Systems. Some of the copyrighted Platinum software would have leaked out of the WHL Offices and ended up in the hands of a possible American investor interested in the WFHL, who turned out to be a young hacker. While WHL Commish Mike Hebert was unavailable for comment, a league spokesperson had this to say: "We have been made aware of the incident, and can only hope that it didn't affect too much our excellent relationship with Platinum (Computing Systems). We have assured them that it was an isolated incident and that it would not happen again. And to make them feel better we have also assured them that the appropriate mesures would be taken against our staff member responsible for the leak. The committee will decide whether the person deserves to be fired, or spanked..." Anyone interested in acquiring the highly acclaimed Line Maker III software, email Brian R. Howe for more information. Around the WFHL --------------- After finishing last season last overall with a record of 19-52-10 for 48 points, the Rampage (Vikings affiliate) has started this season on a better note. They are off to an almost perfect 7-0-2 record after 9 games... Meanwhile, the Cup winners Saskatchewan Farmers (Sparrows affiliate) have only won 2 of their first 8 games (2-5-1). The league leading scorers so far are Jay Pandolfo and Tony Hrkac, both of the Bearcats (Express affiliate), while WHL2's winner of most awards and trophies Farmers' Roman Vopat has 7 goals (6 PP) in 8 games, but with a disappointing -6, the worst on the team. He does still lead the league in shots on goal, but definitely not on pace to anywhere near his 611 SOG of last season. Rumours ------- Nobody is quite sure what happened to a few of the league's GMs... Jeff Tetz (Venom), Denny McEwen (Saints), Rick Luschtinetz (Chiefs) and John Terzella (Hawks) haven't been seen since the beginning of the season. Although it has been reported that John Terzella was seen around Halifax this weekend heading towards his office. Some sources have speculated that the other three GMs all from the Pacific division were heading towards some hot destination to discuss trades and have a good time, and their plane crashed on the way. Rumour out of Chicoutimi is that Alexei Zhamnov might be on his way out. Last season's Hart Trophy winner has been struggling so far this season, with only 8 points in 17 games... Team News --------- *Corinthians News* 5 games into the season, the Corinthians are looking stronger than ever. Led by Nick Boynton, Jaromir Jagr, Keith Tkachuk, Mats Sundin, Vincent Lecavalier, Trevor Linden, Saku Koivu, Valeri Bure, and the stellar play of goaltender Arturs Irbe, the Corinthians have one of the best balanced team they've had in 5 seasons in the WHL, even when they won the cup back in WHL2. Everything is not bright though in Kingston these days, as goaltender Blaine Lacher, considered by a lot of experts one of the most talented goaltenders in the league, is warming the bench, having played only one game over 25 including preseason. Lacher was seen smiling in practice this morning, for probably the first time this season, has he learned he would be getting his first start in the regular season tonight against the Vipers. "I see it as an occasion to prove myself. Last season was a difficult one, as even though we went to the Cybercup finals, I haven't been as sharp as I can be last season. Arturs (Irbe) has been playing great this season and I understand the coaches' decision to go with him since the beginning of the season but I think I can do better. I'm in great shape, focused and now that I got my chance, expect me to be between the pipes for a few games." When asked for comments, coach Hebert had this to say: "Irbe has been great so far and Brad (McCrimmon) and I didn't see any reason to replace him until now. We will probably go with Lacher until he looses a game, and then Irbe will be back until he looses and so on. That way, I think we can keep both goalies motivated and focused." Time will tell if the Corinthians' coaching staff is right on that point. *Mississauga Vipers* The Vipers are just 17 games into hopefully their most successful season yet. Despite playing around .300 hockey and having only 5 wins, the team is dramatically upbeat. The teams slow rebuilding process is well on its way to building the Vipers into a decent team, but that is still about 2 season's down the road. Why are team execs so upbeat with such a poor record?? Yes last season the Vipers were quickers out of the gates and were actually in the playoff race at this searly stage last year, but this season, the team has been drawing more fans then ever with the spectacular play of the WHL's leading Goal Scorer and overall Points leader, Pavol Demitra. In the last 2 games, the Vipers have scored 10 goals. Demitra has 9 points in those two games, It is hard to believe that he didn't get an assist on that other goal =). Demitra had a rough start to the season, the whole team did in fact. The Vipers sucked for the the first 5 games, until the coach made wholesale changes and the chemistry has imporved considerably. Another surprise has been the play of rookie Milan Hejduk who has 12 points since being moved to Demitra's wing. Hejduk is expected to join Demitra as the cornerstones of the team for season's to come. Vetern Messier and Primeau have been playing well since being moved off of Deimtra's line and onto second line. In other team news, the powerplay, because of demitra, primeau and messier has been rocking this whole season with the powerplay being in the top 5, which is an accomplishment considering some of the stacked teams we ahead of. The powerplay started off well, but like usual the penalty killing has been out to lunch, only the hapless Steelcats are worse in terms of penalty killing. The goaltending has been medicore at best, Jablonski has stood on his head and healy who was expected to be a decent backup is just not in shape. Is the tam looking for a goalie?? Yes and No.. They are satisfied with jablonski, they just pray nothing happens to him.. In terms of defence, the chemistry has not been there at all. Rathje and Doig have been playing well, but the duo of Weinrich and Carney has not clicked. After they were separated, they started to play better. In other rumors, the usual 2 trade offers a week for demitra keep coming in and the teams can't figure out why the Vipers GM doesn't want to trade the leagues's leading scorer?? I have no idea why hmmm would it because he is playing awesome and is single handidly winning games?? Something no player that has been offered to the Vipers can do... The team has a logjam at center and might try trading a center for an equal winger in the near future. The Viper's defence as bad as it is, isn't expected to get any help in the near future unfortunately.... Question the critics have been asking lately.. "How long can this Demitra led Vipers keep playing the way they are, and can the rest of the team elevate their game to Demitra's level.." Only time will tell.. *Pittsburgh Endless* Pittsburgh Endless have gotten a horrid start to the season. Injuries as well as dekes have made it tough on the team's confidence level. However just recently alternate captain Bob Carpenter recovered from an injury as well as several players came back from deep slumps. This could mean that Endless might actually field a competitive team. The first line is more or less made up of Fedorov & Bure. That's basically the firepower of the Endless. The other lines are there to neutralize the other teams and maybe chip in with a couple of goals now and then. Defensivly Endless are looking rather bleak but solid. Nothing fancy in sight but also no screw ups. In goal we have Kolzig, usually, but he has been playing rather badly so instead back up Roussell has been playing the bulk of the games. Trade block: Martin Gelinas RW 69 Kevin Todd C 67 Teemu Riihijärvi LW 66 *Toronto Stallions* Sittler's After Five Report TORONTO(AP) - I have once again been asked to write a weekly article regarding the Toronto Stallions. It is tough because we are in the midst of a flurry of trading here in Toronto. In the past two weeks, we have moved out; Pavel Bure, Adam Oates, Stephane Richer, John Vanbiesbrouck, Martin Gelinas, Dan Kesa, Konstantin Shafranov And we have brought in; Alexei Yashin, Zigmund Palffy, Bill Guerin, Derek King, Craig Billington, Mike Knuble Alexei was the first player ever drafted by the Toronto organization over five years ago, he has finally been re-united with the club. Two other players back with Toronto from that initial Entry Draft are, Wendel Clark (Drafted 7th) and Todd Gill (Drafted 11th). Some milestones that have been reached by players so far this season; Curtis Joseph won is 100th game in 203 career starts, Roman Hamrlik scored his 200th point in 308 career games. Alexei Yashin and Geoff Sanderson have each taken over 1000 shots in 311 and 310 career games respectively, Jason Lafreniere scored his 100th point in 198 career games. After a slow start, the Stallions are picking things up. We currently sit 1st in our division, 3rd in our conference and 6th in the league with a 9-4-2 record for 20 points. We are in the middle of a six game road trip, currently 2-1-0. We are off to Spokane next, then Southampton and finally Edmonton to play the Lindros-led Super-Hot Vikings. Losing to the Chiefs two games ago snapped a 10 unbeaten streak, a streak long enough to tie a club record set in 1997-1998(3). We would like to make it known that defenceman Mathieu Schneider is on the trading block. Recently returned from injury, Mathieu is pointless in the three games he has played in, but is a +3. D.S. *Waterloo Lunatics* Lunatics make this star shine once again... WATERLOO - As the Waterloo Lunatics season came to an end last year, the team was destroyed by a 4-0 sweep in round one of the playoffs, a number of players leaving the team due to retirement and contract squabbles. However, as the Lunatics look to fill the void by these departures, they, like everyone else looked to the Entry Draft and to make some deals. As that failed to bring a center to the organization who could play as the #2 center on the team, we saw the Lunatics take a gamble by claiming veteran center Craig Janney off of waivers. At first, many teams laughed at the Lunatics organization for claiming what some called an old and washed up center. However, the Lunatics worked on with Janney, and after a good preseason stint with the team, they signed him to a one year deal with an option for a second. The claiming of Janney off of waivers by the Lunatics has paid off big time. So far, through 15 games this year, Craig Janney is leading the Lunatics team in scoring. P # Player GP G A PTS +/- PP SH GW GT S PIM F 18 Craig Janney 15 6 9 15 2 4 0 1 0 41 6 Not only is Janney happy about his success, but GM Jason Stumpf is extremely happy with Janney's success, so much so that he has been pushing to give Janney some time on the teams #1 line to see what the aging veteran can do. Will we be seeing Janney do what Pat Lafontaine did for the Lunatics a few seasons ago ending up 2nd in the league in scoring? Only time will tell.
