Offsides: The Official Magazine of the WHL Commissioner's Note ------------------- On November 19, the WHL launched the search page on the website. The utility allows users to search the whole website for anything they want, and returns the file names of all the documents containing the searched word(s). Although it is not the most intuitive to use, once you get the hang of it it can really help find what you're looking for. Rumours ------- As reported last week, missing GMs Jeff Tetz, Denny McEwen and Rick Luschtinetz still haven't contacted their team or the league about their whereabouts. We now fear the worst. Commish Hebert was heard saying: "You know, we're hoping they are just taking a break from the WHL pressure, vacationing under the sun or something, but even though we don't really want to think about it, it is still a possibility that their plane did crash..." Team News --------- *Des Moines Dominators* After a very successful first season and then a very lackluster season the Dominators management has been waiting on the improvement of their young talent to surface to form a very, very solid hockey team. It's been a couple of seasons now and there hasn't been much of an improvement from the Dominators and by the looks of things there won't be. Amidst a 9 game winless streak GM Jason Kolsrud finally lost his sense of humor and his patience for his young team. "Look at us. WE SUCK!!! And that is all there is to it. We were trying to be patient with this young team hoping they would bond and make this into a successful team but they haven't done sh*t and I can't wait any longer. There needs to be some major changes made and that is exactly what I am gonna do. If I have to trade every damn player on this team to turn this around I will. Well, that isn't actually quite true. There is a handful of players that will still be wearing a Dominator uniform this season. Joe Thornton, Simon Gagne, Ty Jones, Paul Mara, Kelly Chase and Patrick DesRochers. Those guys won't be traded in any way shape or form. No deal concerning them will even be considered." said GM Kolsrud The Dominators could use a force up front as well as another top notch Dman, to go with Mara, as well as a better number one goalie. "Basically we are looking to make the blockbuster of blockbuster trades. Age will probably not be much of a factor unless the guy happens to just about be dead. We need a winger on each side of Joe who can either put the puck in the net or feed him the puck. We have tried a couple different combinations and it just isn't working. We need a big time winger as well as a big time Dman. Goaltending isn't such a big concern as Patrick (DesRochers) is playing tremendous hockey in the WFHL and will be our go to guy next season. Our main focus will be getting the power up front to turn this team around." said Kolsrud. *Hartford Dropkicks* A Good Week in New England Dropkicks fans have been treated to their fair share of excitement in the past week. They were not beaten once on the ice and looked impressive in several close games. A major trade with their (formerly) toughest rivals, the Krushers is looking like a success early on, despite the fact that some important players were sent packing for Chi Town. Much has also been said about the off ice antics that are heating up the WHL, most of which is being generated between four mutual enemies. The Express, the Voodoo, the Krushers and the Dropkicks have all at some point attacked each other, making for some real heat in the Campbell Conference. GM Chris Kordyback, proprietor of the highly successful "Kord's Gray Bath, Shower and Spa House" chain (mistakedly referred to as "Gay" in Vancouver newspapers)says most of the pieces are in place for a real run at the Cyber Cup. "I think we'd ideally like to aquire a solid backup goalie but other than that we're fairly happy with the lineup as it stands. I mean, when you beat the Wales conference's very best team the Corinths 3-0 you can't be really unhappy. Now we just have to prepare for the Three Wankers of the Apocolypse that play in Jasper,Vancouver and Chicago." We'll see you next week, Wayne Olechow, The Hartford Sporting News *Saskatoon Enforcers* The Saskatoon Enforcers have had a tremendous season so far but it isn't the offseaon trades that have made a difference. Darren Turcotte and Ron Hextal who were brought in to strengthen the weakest parts of the team hasn't played a single game yet. Instead it's the development of players like Dan focht and Sergei Berezin and the new attitude of the team to score score and score more goals. This is why the Enforcers has climbed from 22nd last year in scoring to 5th this year. And the future looks bright as a group of talented youngsters like Connolley and Antropov will be ready soon to play in the WHL. Team situation at the moment: Denis Pederson who has recoverd from a back injury is replacing Nathan Lafayette on 3rd line. Oleg Tverdovsky is out for at least a week after beeing hit on his left hand by a stick last game against the Stallions. *Toronto Stallions* Sittler's After Five Report TORONTO(AP) - We finished our six game road trip with a 5-1 record, and two convincing wins over the Venom(8-3) and the Vikings(6-1). Both of those clubs are excellent, the Venom of course are the reigning Cyber Cup Champions and the Vikings are finally playing as well as GM Lee McEwen has been expecting they would for the past two years. Just goes to show, perseverance pays off! My hat is off to Mr. McEwen. Our last two games were at home, the first of which saw the Stallions fall prey to the "Homecoming Blues". Our first home game in 7 games and we have to settle for a 2-2 tie against the Saints. We then won against the Chiefs to take the three game series with them 2-1. Toronto remains the only club to be undefeated at home(4-0-3). Last week we talked about the player movement. This week, I will update thing regarding the new guys. Alexei Yashin: Played 14 games, and has 9 points(2-7), 40 shots and is +3. Alex has played great. After Adam Oates was traded, Alex took over on the second line. And with Wendel Clark and Steve Heinze as his wingers, he has played exceptional. At his current pace, he could finish the season with 55 points. Quote: "This team is playing real well. Everyone knows their roles, and performs them without question. I only hope I can continue to pull my weight." Zigmund Palffy: Played 5 games, and has 6 points(3-3), 13 shots and is +3. Ziggy is doing everything. He was expected to come in and make an impact, and he has done that. Playing with Joe Sakic, the current Platinum Cup 3-Star leader, hasn't hurt, in fact he has help improve Joe's game. At this place he would finish the season with 86 points. Quote: "This is easy with Joe as my centre. All I have to do is get into the open and take the shot. Either Sandy or Joe will be in front of the net to screen and tip them." Bill Guerin: Played 14 games, and has 4 points(1-3), 33 shots and is +4. While not scoring he is getting his chances and is a +4. Bill is still hampered by a bruised foot, there was a hairline fracture which has been healing. Expect at least another week before he is 100% again. Still at this pace Bill could finish the season with 22 points. Quote: "I've not done much yet. I need this foot to heal, then I can get back to playing my game. I hate not being able to crush some bodies into the boards. Clark is doing a great job, but he can't keep them all bay." Derek King: Played 5 games, and has 2 points(1-1), 11 shots and is +2. Derek is trying to find his way still. Currently relegated to the third line, he is learning to play with his new linemates. Derek is expected to start showing signs of improvement shortly. As long as he is a plus player, I am fine with it. Quote: "It's tough. I was a guy on one of the top two lines all my career. Now I play the third line. Jay and Bull are good players, and I need to start pulling my weight. I just don't want to get traded, with my current luck I'd go to Hamilton!" All in all, everyone is playing great hockey, but we can't get complacent. There are still four clubs with better records than ours, so there is still something more we can be doing. And with one of the worst powerplays in the league, we can always work on something. D.S. Note from the GM: Darryl Sittler is not one to talk too highly of himself. So I will do it for him. Darryl has coached 205 regular season games here in Toronto, 241 including playoffs. In those games he has won 129 or 67.1% (148/64.9% with Playoffs). He has back-to-back 40+ win seasons. Darryl's team has allowed 216 less goals than they have scored(212 including playoffs). There are few coaches in this league that can boast as good a record, and we will be pushing for him to win his second Jack Adams Trophy. *Vancouver Voodoo* Things in Van are going good. And despite the Pacific Division being one of the toughest in the league, the Voodoo are 5-0-1 against teams in this division. Coach Tom Renney is happy with the team is playing and GM Darren Kinnaird is not currently involved in any trade activities. A week ago the rumour was that Kinnaird was trying get Wade Redden from the Steelcats but that never came about. Kinnaird was quoted as saying, " Berteotti places too high of value on Redden." In other news, there are rumours heating up that we may see the Sedin twins here in North America before the end of the season. Both have been destroying the Swedish Elite league, and may join the Syracuse Crunch farm team soon. More on that as it unfolds. That is all here in Van. Last Week --------- On a struggling Vipers team, Pavol Demitra is shining. His 13 points in the last 5 games allowed him to take the leading scoring spot in front of Lindros, Kariya and Roenick.
