OffSides (The Official Magazine of the WHL) ------------------------------------------------------- Editor’s Note ---------------- I just want to thank Michael Hebert for taking on the magaizne while I was away. The All-Star break is approaching and ballots will be sent out after Day 35. I also want to thank everyone that has responded to the poll. Instead of posting results, I am going to use the data to write articles so if you haven’t responded yet please do. Please keep sending any articles or bits of information you may have. Due to the large amount of information in this week’s magazine, it will come in two parts. Commissioner’s Note -------------------------- Discussions have started within the Board of Directors regarding rules, possible changes, etc. Conclusions will be announced as soon as something is reached about each issue. The league offices will be closed from December 23rd to January 3rd, during which time Commissioner Mike Hebert will be away. Reminder will be sent before. Hockey wise, the season is going well, trading has picked up after a short down period, and the Voodoo have taken the overall lead. Vipers' star Pavol Demitra is still leading the scorers, and is on pace for 143 points, which would beat Lindros' WHL record of 138 points established with the Mallrats in WHL2. Team News -------------- Toronto Stallions --------------------- Sittler's After Five Report What Happened: -------------- The past week has seen us win four games, lose one game, lose two players and maintain first overall in the conference. We lost to Pavel Demitra's Vipers on a very late goal that was scored with only 4 seconds remaining in the third period. Demitra scored one and assisted on two, including the game winner. He is tough to stop. We won our home/home series with Montreal. Both games going 3-2. We lost Mathieu Schneider in the first game because of a vicious slash from Cameron Mann late in the third. Tape was sent to the WHL but it was not deemed severe enough to warrant a suspension. The biggest game was a rematch of the season opener against Kingston. The Corinthians are one of our toughest competitors, having beaten us in 18 of the 26 games our two clubs have played. They embarrased us in the season opener in Kingston by outshooting us 30-26 and outscoring us 5-0. This time, however, we managed to return the favour to them. Zigmund Palffy opened the scoring 1:26 into the game and twelve minutes later Todd Warriner, whose name has been mentioned in a few trade rumours, scored the game winner. We won the game 5-1. Our final game was against Almont, who are struggling. The Raiders have had a hard time winning lately and Toronto was not what they needed. We won the game 7-1 as Chris Osgood had a horrible night. Steve Heinze, who has been struggling lately to score points, was injured for about two weeks on a late hit by Peter Popovic. Upcoming player achievements: ----------------------------- In the very near future certain players will be reaching certain personal career milestones. Alexei Yashin is 8 points shy of 300 career points. Mathieu Schneider is 8 points shy of 200 career points. Teppo Numminen is 11 points shy of 200 career points. Derek King is 14 points shy of 200 career points. The Future: ----------- Four of our next five games are on the road. And throughout the next week we will be without the services of Mathieu Schneider and Steve Heinze. Upcoming games include the struggling Express. Followed by the Dominators. Then by some scheduling quirk we play two games in Hamilton. Why this isn't a home/home series is beyond us, but it happens again later in the season (76/77) where we again play two games in Hamilton. Playing those lousey 'Cats is bad enough, but having to endure that Hamilton air for the span of two games is punishment beyond belief. We finally return to Toronto for the fifth game hosting Montreal. D.S. Hartford Dropkicks ------------------------ Dropkicks Still Going Strong Lance McDonald Reporting As of Day 31, the Dropkicks are on a 17 game undefeated streak. This is all new to the second year Hartford franchise, and the mood around town is a good one. Fans and players alike are enjoying hockey more than ever. "Going to games means more than just throwing 40's of Olde English at the other team's bench," said Curtis Starko, a seasons ticket holder, "we can still do that and as a matter of fact the scoreboard still reminds us to, but we are really following the game more now..." "And throwing the bottles too...ya!" adds his hammered girlfriend Jen Kinnaird, "DROPKIICKS!!!WooO!!" The Hartford dressing room is equally jovial. "Uncle" Brantt Myhres has been called up after some spectacular play and a deal wa made that brings Kris Draper to the Kicks. Both should help the streak continue, or at least prevent an Express-like slide. It just remains to be seen if these upstarts can keep rolling at this pace. "I think we should just be realistic and face a few facts," said Dropkicks assistant captain Tom Poti, "I can't eat barbecue sauce, Jes Golbez posts nude photos of the fat girl from Wilson Phillips on his Hockey's Future page, and we can't go undefeated for very much longer. What's important is that we don't let up at any point and that we continue to compete each and every night. Indeed Tom is right. Golbez does have strange tastes in women. A Look Back ---------------- In this new feature, we will look at the history of the franchises in the WHL. To start with we will look at one of the WHL’s founding franchises. The WHL is now in its 5th season and the Edmonton Vikings are one of only four teams that are still playing in the same location under their original owner. (The others are the Waterloo Lunatics, Chicoutimi Sparrows and Vancouver Voodoo. Brian Howe moved his Milton Mustangs to Toronto for the WHL’s second season.) During those five years the Vikings have proven themselves to be competitive, but have failed to take that next step. As we near the year 2000 the Vikings are off to their best start ever and look like Cyber Cup contenders. But as we say good-bye to the twentieth century, it would be wrong not to look back at the Vikings formation. Players selected in 1995 dispersal draft: 35 Players still with the Vikings Organization: 4. (Owen Nolan was selected 74th overall and was traded to the Waterloo Lunatics. He was traded back to the Vikings prior to the start of WHL4. Darryl Sydor was drafted 267th overall and has played every single game since Day 1. Dean McAmmond was taken in the 19th round, 454th overall. He is currently playing with the Red Deer Rampage in the WFHL but has played in all four previous seasons. Jamie Storr was taken in the farm team draft and is the Vikings #1 goaltender.) Where are they now? The Vikings first three selections in the original dispersal draft were Alexei Zhamnov, Patrick Roy and Eric Desjardins. All 3 are still starring in the WHL after some success in Edmonton. Roy was traded after WHL1, along with the team’s first captain Brent Sutter, to the Struer Norsemen in exchange for Curtis Joseph and Chad Kilger. Zhamnov was traded early in WHL3 to the Toronto Stallions in exchange for Adam Oates, Matthew Barnaby and a 1st round pick. Going with Zhamnov to Toronto was Sergei Berezin and a second rounder. Desjardins was moved later in the same season to Waterloo where he joined the Lunatics in the 2nd biggest trade in team history. Desjardins along with Jason Arnott, Adam Oates and Matthew Barnaby were traded fro Al MacInnis, Vince Damphousse, Scott Young and Alexandre Daigle. (Young, incidentally, is the only player to be traded from the Vikings twice. He was traded to the Fort Saskatchewan Fury for Brian Rolston after WHL1, and was moved to Chicoutimi for Dave Mason this past summer.) Captain’s History: Brent Sutter, WHL1. Eric Desjardins, WHL2-January 11, 1998. Rod Brind’Amour, WHL4-present. Coaching History: Lee McEwen, WHL1-2, 17 games in WHL3. Lorne Moelleken, 19 games in WHL3. Ken Hitchcock, 38 games in WHL3, WHL4-present. Team Record (Thru Day 30 of WHL5): 171-136-19 for a .554 winning percentage. 94-63-11 at home and 77-73-8 on the road. All-Star Site to be Determined ------------------------------------- With the WHL All-Star game coming up after Day 42 the league announced that the site has yet to be determined. "We’re still looking for a team to bid on the game," was the reason put forth by All-Star director Lee McEwen. Teams have until Day 35 to get their bids in. Bids can be sent to leemcewen@yahoo.com. The winning bid will be revealed in the next issue of OffSides. Player of the Week ----------------------- Michael Henrich, Mississauga IceDogs - The highest-scoring rookie in the league added to his total as he scored 6 goals and added 2 assists for 8 points last week. Henrich has fit in nicely in Mississauga as he battles Kingston’s Vincent Lecavalier in what looks to be a 2 man race for the Calder Trophy. Game of the Week ---------------------- Day 33, Stallions at Steelcats - One of the fiercest rivalries in the league is renewed on Saturday as the Toronto Stallions travel down the highway to Hamilton. The Stallions are looking to run away with the division title and a win in Hamilton would put them 14 points up on the ‘Cats.
