OffSides (the Official magazine of the WHL) ------------------------------------------- Editor's Note ------------- Sorry for the many delays everyone, but Offsides is finally back online. The new publishing schedule is going to be every Friday/Saturday. If you have any articles or features, send them to me by Friday at 5:00. As we head into the second half of the season, many changes are upon us which should result in lots of player movement. The playoff races are all tight and no one's position is entrenched. Commisioner's Notes ------------------- The WHL Board of Directors has approved the following rule change: (Extract from the WHL5 Rulebook) Third Criteria - NHL Counterpart -Factors: player's NHL counterpart, randomly chosen -Number of Players: 3 -Effect: up or down -Description: All the players except the 4 rerated as Young Players, NHL Superstar, or with Prospect status are eligible. A player rerated under this criteria will take the current WHL Rating of his NHL counterpart. If a selected player doesn't have new WHL Rating, his rating will remain unchanged. At least 1 of the 3 players selected must be rerated down. (Amended Rule) Third Criteria - NHL Counterpart -Factors: player's NHL counterpart, randomly chosen -Number of Players: 3 -Effect: up or down -Description: All the players except the 4 rerated as Young Players, NHL Superstar, or with Prospect status are eligible. A player rerated under this criteria will take the current WHL Rating of his NHL counterpart. If the selected player does not have a new rating, see the following *exception*. At least 1 of the 3 players selected must be rerated down (or retired) -Exception: -if the player is age over 25 and has not played in the NHL in the last 3 seasons, he is retired -if the player is over 25 but has played at least 1 NHL game in the last 3 seasons (but obviously has't played in the last 1 season, which is the reason why he did not get a rating), he is given a farm rerate equivalent, -11 for players, -9 for goalies -if the player is age 25 or less, his rating remains unchanged To get an idea of the effect of this new rule, let;s take for example the last rerate. This is what would have happened to the players who remained unchanged because they didn't have a new rating: Corinths, Iafrate, 33, played last in 1997-98, rating 65 to 54 Corinths, Lacher, 29, played last in 1995-96, rating 70, retires Hawks, Methot, 21, rating unchanged 52 Seagulls, Hankinson, 30, played last in 1994-95, rating 73, retires Chiefs, Patterson, 27, played last in 1996-97, rating 62 to 51 Endless, Brousseau, 26, played last in 1997-98, rating 56 to 45 Krushers, Zultek, 20, rating unchanged 67 Express, J.Brown, 33, played last in 1997-98, rating 78 to 67 Saints, Semak, 33, played last in 1996-97, rating 64 to 53 Venom, Burridge, 33, played last in 1997-98, rating 64 to 53 Beddoes, Voodoo, 29, played last in 1996-97, rating 51 to 40 The Board also started discussions on a few other issues but hasn't arrived to a conclusion on them just yet. Michael Hebert Web Hockey League Commissioner Team News --------- Des Moines Dominators --------------------- Big changes in Des Moines have led to better play and more wins for the Dominators. Gone are Lyle Odelein, Patrick Elias, Remi Royer, Rob Gaudreau and the Doms first round draft pick. Coming to the Doms are Rick Tocchet, Kevin Hatcher, Robert Dome, Tony Twist and Brian Leetch. Dome and Twist were sent to Dubuque of the WFHL. Hatcher and Leetch were the big players that are helping the Doms young defensive core. It also has added a dimension of scoring from the blueline. Elias had fallen out of favor with GM Jason Kolsrud. He hadn't been producing as expected and was being moved between the three lines trying to get him to realize what the team wanted from him. Odelein was great but Hatcher was the more offensive of the two which made him expendable. Royer wasn't playing all that bad but to get the vetern leadership they had to send one of there young Dmen to get him and Mara is still the future of the blueline for the Doms. "We needed the changes and so far they are working fine. We got some grit and offense which we despartely needed. There will be more changes on the way as I am still not quite satisfied with the team. We are still on the lookout for a first line left and right winger. We still have Olli Jokinen which we are willing to part with to get what we need." said GM Kolsrud. On the WFHL front, Patrick DesRochers has played in all the games so far and is posting a 13-10-2 record with a 2.98 GAA and a .901 save percentage. DesRochers still isn't being looked at to come up to Des Moines this season but may get a shot after the All-Star break. Matthew Herr and Nelson Emerson are leading the team in points but there has been some rumours floating around that Emerson has been asked about but nothing has been worked out. Changes have been made and more changes are on the way. The Doms are starting to gain confidence and are starting to win some games now they just need to get the final piece of the puzzle to get the Doms over the top. Tampere Tappara ---------------- While this week saw the likes of Manny Fernandez, Chris Drury, J.P. Dumont, Gary Suter, Adam Mair, and Brett Clark get traded it also saw Nik Khabibulin, Petr Sykora, Per-Johan Axelsson, Scott Walker, Sami Helenius, and Patric Kjellberg arrive in Tampere. The new GM/OWNER Chris Kubinec hopes to turn this team around for next season so that they will be able to compete on a consistant basis. Coach Mario Lemieux believes that with this new found team chemistry that he can begin to bring out the best in the players now instead of later. Edmonton Vikings ---------------- Center Niklas Sundstrom is reportedly on the trading block. While the team isn't unhappy with his play, he is being dangled in hopes of attracting another puck-moving defenseman. Sundstrom has been with the Vikings his entire career and has 35 points this season. Spokane Chiefs -------------- The Chiefs are still looking for a star left-winger and a #1 centre. The draft looks to be their best bet with little available to trade. WFHL3 All-Star Series --------------------- Today the coaches of the Nash and Driver Conferences announced their lineups for the WFHL3 All-Star Series, to take place this upcoming weekend. These coaches are Joel Quenneville from the Saskatchewan Farmers, and Dan Sager of the Dubuque Dominators. The series will take place in Saskatoon, home of the WFHL Farmers and WHL Enforcers, with the first game scheduled Friday night, second game Saturday afternoon, and third game Sunday afternoon. If you're a goalie, it takes a maximum of 3 games to get your first win. If you're a player, and your name is not Dana Murzyn, you will get your first point within 10 games. That's pretty good. Honorable mentions to Benoit Hogue of the Express (41 games), Kevin Dineen of the Seagulls (34 games) and Igor Ulanov of the Voodoo (31 games), who despite playing on very good teams are still looking for their second point this season. League Notes ------------ The Vancouver Voodoo have once again loaded up on first round draft picks as they continue to tinker with their successful line-up. Several players have caught the attention of Darren Kinnaird but for now he is keeping his cards close to his chest. No matter which direction they go look for the Voodoo to make alot of headlines in the offseason. The results still aren't there but alot of league insiders are whispering that the Juggernaughts may be the league's most improved team. With such talents as Weight, Whitney, Kapanen, Gonchar and Erikkson, look for Montreal to turn alot more heads down the stretch. The four team race at the top of the Western Conference has the top 2 teams in the east chuckling. Both the Stallions and the Corinthians have alot to gain from such a battle. The eventual Western Conference champion has a much tougher road to the Cyber Cup finals and whoever emerges should be tired and beaten-up. The best player in the league right now might be rookie Vincent Lecavalier. He has stood out night after night playing with the best talent in the league and should beat Saku Koivu's rookie record of 60 goals, set back in WHL2. There is no clear cut favourite for this year's first overall pick with several names being bandied about. Names such as Steve Kariya, Marian Gaborik, Danny Heatley and Jason Welter are the ones most commonly heard. Several teams have said they'd be willing to trade all of their selections this year to have a shot at Jason Spezza in next year's draft.
