WHL WEEKLY : Playoff Edition, Season 1, Sixth Issue In this issue, 1. WHL News 2. Blizzard Press Release 3. Final Playoff Records 4. Trophies 1. WHL News After 13 wins in the playoffs, the lucky streak of Kirk McLean and the Kodiaks ended on the second game of the finals. Two goals by John Leclair, including the winning goal in the 3rd period, gave the Mallrats their first victory in these Cyber Cup Finals. After that, the Mallrats never looked back. Great performances by Mario Lemieux, Eric Lindros, Dmitri Mironov and Michal Sykora lead the Albany Mallrats to their first Cyber Cup. In the following ceremonies, Mario Lemieux was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, as the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs. In other news, GM of the Oakville Raptors, Matthew Pitt, announced that the team was moving to Hamilton. They will be renamed the Bulldogs. Look for a potential rivalry between the Hitmen and the Bulldogs in Hamilton next season. 2. Blizzard Press Release After weeks of deliberation, the Moscow Blizzard has finally chosen a new home and a new name. The Blizzard are moving to picturesque Struer, Denmark and will be known as the Struer Norsemen from now on. Initially, GM Lori Steward had plans of moving the team to Chicoutimi, Quebec or to her hometown of Melfort, Saskatchewan. Neither materialized, and this reporter feels that Steward suffers from ornithophobia, or the fear of birds, since Chicoutimi is hometown to the Sparrows and Melfort to the WLUHL team, the Falcons. Struer, Denmark was chosen from three European cities all vying for the franchise. Sheffield and Manchester, both English cities lost out to the Scandenavians. In a brief interview with Pat Lafontaine, team captain, Pat told us that he was pleased about the move. " Moscow is too damned cold!" 3. Please note that the Art Ross, William Jennings, Presidents, and Conn Smythe Trophies will also be awarded, but they are not based on voting. Please note also that for next year there will be an article in the rules to determine who is considered a rookie. For this year, Calder nominees are young players, and there won't be an All-Star Rookie Team this year. So here are the winners of the performance trophies: - Art Ross Trophy (Most Points in the Season) Sergei Fedorov Hermitage Bangers - William Jennings Trophy (Fewest Goals Against) Patrick Roy Edmonton Vikings - Conn Smythe Trophy (Playoffs M.V.P.) Mario Lemieux Albany Mallrats - Presidents Trophy (Best Record in Season) Minneapolis Monarchs Created and written by Michael Hebert, Commissioner of the Web Hockey League.
