Changes in the Awards 1. ************************************** ****** THE WHL WEEKLY INTERVIEW ****** ************************************** Well, Jim Hauer has a broken leg, a collapsed lung, seven broken ribs, a big cavity, mad cow disease, and a hangnail so he's off this week. In his place I interviewed co-GM of the Bangers and former Web Hockey League commissioner, Kevin G. Nash. DAVE: I'm sure you've been waiting to explain yourself, so why did you resign as commissioner? Were you too busy with the KHL? KEVIN: I received a lot of inquires about the KHL and wanted to get everyone with interest involved. So I decided to start another league besides the KHL. I just didn't realize the workload that came with trying to run two leagues. At the time the WHL started, the KHL had wrapped up its second successful season. When Season 3 of the KHL started, there was too much to do. I had a decision to make and I decided that The KHL was my top priority (sorry guys), and I felt it would be best if someone else took over the WHL. DAVE: A week or two before you announced your resignation, you asked the owners if we should keep the league going. What were the results? KEVIN: It was really positive. Almost all GMs responded that their interest was still there. DAVE: If it was positive, why did you proceed to quit? KEVIN: Like I said, the KHL was at the top of my list and the GMs in that league were totally involved in everything that went on in the league. It is total participation. It's like a first born child. Even though more could be developed, there will only be ONE First.... DAVE: After your resignation, why did you stay on as co-GM of the Bangers? KEVIN: The League has a great bunch of guys as GMs. I wanted to stay involved with the league and the Bangers gave me a chance to see how everything was going. I think everything has turned out great (except the recent slide of the Bangers). DAVE: About those Bangers, do you think they have what it takes to take the division? Or even to go all the way? KEVIN: I think so. Fedorov, Murphy & Richer are all playing well. We are in a really tough division and it's gonna be a race to the finish. DAVE: Is there a piece of the puzzle that the Bangers need? KEVIN: We need some more help on Defense. We haven't made many changes all year, but that could soon change. DAVE: Are you more involved in the team than Melvin Crewe? KEVIN: I don't think so. Melvin is also involved in my KHL league and he is known as Mr. Trader. If he doesn't make a trade each day, then he must be busy at something else. It's just that with the Bangers, he has to consult with me, and I deter him away from a lot of deals. He's a great guy and I think we make a great team... DAVE: What could the WHL learn from the KHL? KEVIN: Unity. The GMs have to be able to communicate and discuss things rationally. We often all get online and discuss changes for the league. The GMs have to learn to be patient and respect their fellow GMs. This is only for fun and lets keep it that way. The KHL is into season 3 and still going strong. It would be nice to see the WHL succeed as the KHL has. And I think it will. DAVE: Do you think the WHL is in as good a state as ever? KEVIN: Definitely. I don't think I could have put in the time that was needed to make this league a success. It is nice to see that it has survived. And it has survived and even thrived. We hope that it will continue to thrive for years to come, and we all owe Kevin our thanks for his prior and current work in the WHL. This is Dave Shumka in Hermitage, Newfoundland. 2. ************************************** *** THE OTHER WHL WEEKLY INTERVIEW *** ************************************** Jared Tashimaro, new owner of the Oakville Raptors has been thrust into the league and is struggling to make the playoffs. I had a chance to speak with him. DAVE: How were you notified that you were the new owner of the Raptors? Did Shaun just say, "This is your team. Take it or leave it."? JARED: Pretty much so. Actually, it was kind of unusual, first I was offered the team, then I was told I did not get it, then I was told I did have the franchise. Worked out for the best though. DAVE: Was there an adjustment period between when you were notified and when you were placed at the helm of the team or were you just thrust into the position? JARED: Pretty much just thrust into the position. DAVE: How did you feel about the team you were dealt? JARED: Well, they were a borderline team, and still are. This team is lacking depth, as well as solid goaltending. DAVE: You've made a couple deals. You traded away two of my personal favorite wingers, Mogilny and Bure. Can you tell me why you decided to make that trade? JARED: Just to get some early picks, to make a stronger team next year. Bure and Mogilny were a big loss, but Yzerman, Sheppard and some picks were a pretty good gain. DAVE: Do you think John MacLean and Ray Sheppard can fill the gap left by Mogilny and Bure? JARED: Most likely not. Yzerman, MacLean, and Sheppard might be able to compare. Sheppard is a goal scorer, hopefully he can fill Bure's shoes to some extent. DAVE: Your deals make a lot of sense. You lose two right-wings, you gain two right-wings, you lose a center, you gain a center. What I don't get is why you got Shtalenkov and McLennan. Why do you think you need a total of four goalies? JARED: I don't need four goalies. Right now Lacher has the starting role, but Moog will get a crack at the number one spot. Shtalenkov and McLennan will most likely be on the farm, in hopes that they will improve. Then they will be played, or traded for better talent. DAVE: How many players do you think you are away from being really competitive? JARED: Alot, right now. We need some stronger right-wing, and more depth. Hopefully with a first, two second, and two third round picks, we can add to our team. DAVE: Do you see the Raptors winning the Cyber Cup, or is that unrealistic? JARED: This year that's unrealistic. Lorne has put together a great team, who are playing great. (I can't even beat him in the other leagues we're in). Maybe next year, depending on who we add. I wish Jared and the Raptors the best of luck. He's a really nice guy! 3. DAVE SHUMKA'S SHORT, POINTLESS EDITORIAL In the past days there has been talk about unfair trade offers. Around the trading deadline there are bound to be some unfair offers. You have to take them with a grain of salt. I handle the unfair offers like this: I respond to the offer by saying it's unfair and I make a fairer (not a real word) counter-offer. If they persist, I just say I don't really need to make a trade, so forget it. 4. GM APPRECIATION by Jason Stumpf of the Lunatics In the news and around the world it seems that the people who do good barley ever get recognized. They are the people who are put on the back pages of the papers, they are the people who are forgotten. Well, as the trading deadline approaches and communication between the league and the other GMs comes to an end I feel there are some GMs out there who should be thanked. It is the those GMs that make a league fun by putting out press releases, responding to trade offers and putting out contraversial news flashes. To me these are the guys who make the league fun and what it is. So I would just like to thank these GMs, they are some of the GMs that I have traded with this year or I have talked to and have maybe not made a deal but they made it more enjoyable for me. Hot off the presses of the Waterloo Chronicle: ================================================================= As the Trading deadline comes down to an end, the rivalry between the Waterloo Warriors and the Waterloo Lunatics is heating up. Both teams have been working hard on making trades getting their team ready for the stretch run. The Warriors, once a very dominating team early in the year have started to fall apart of late, and the Lunatics with newly re-acquired left-wing Kevin Stevens paired up with Mark Recchi are starting to pick up some steam and move in on the Warriors. Though this division is close, the battle of Waterloo is starting to heat up. Left-wing tough guy Gino Odjick had this to say: "Hey I know people are saying that this will be close, but in my mind we are going to trash those Warriors. They are making deals, we are making deals. I just have to say one thing to them, if they want a fight, we will give it to them and knock them silly. Watch out because when we start to go crazy, there is no stopping us." Well this should be a very good fight to the end and we will have to see who comes out on top. Still, we had some outstanding performances. The most notable of which was Mario Lemieux of Adam Ardis' Mallrats. In one game he had two goals and three assists and in the course of the week he scored five goals and added five assists for ten points. That's why I am proud to honor him with this weeks Player of the Week award. Honorable mention to Alexei Zhamnov of the Vikings and Eric Lindros of the world-famous Mallrats, each with two goals and eight assists. 7. CHANGES IN THE AWARDS I've decided to drop the "Team of the Week" award. There are so many teams with similar records, what's the point? If you want to decide for yourself, look at the last ten games played record in the stats, then you'll see who's hot. I've also decided to expand the "Player of the Week" award. There will be a "Forward of the Week" award, a "Defenseman of the Week" award, a "Goalie of the Week" award, and an overall "Player of the Week" award. Defeat Fury 4-2! Last night the Kodiaks made it eleven games without a defeat with the help of rookie Sergei Petrenko who notched his first WHL goal and Neal Broten who continued his outstanding play of late with an assist in the second period to continue his streak of four consecutive games with a point. (if you're listening WHL weekly, ya gotta mention how hot this team is next issue, Neal Broten player of the week?) Captain Rob DiMaio said of the win streak "it's tough for other teams to come here to New York with all the noise and the great fan support we get from the crowds here at the Garden, especially when we've been winning as much as we have of late. The crowds have really helped. I thought they were going to lift the roof right of the building it was so loud after Konowalchuck scored to make it 3-2." Petrenko had this to say after the game "I was so happy to score my first goal and help the team to win. It feel very good. It feel very good to be in New York and be playing hockey with Ron Francis. In the last two games Monarchs have 1 goal against on 53 shots. This just strength Vernon's position as the best goalie in WHL. Headcoach Nilsson commented Vernon's performance "He's incredible. He took everything last night. I didn't believe my eyes, but it was true". Mike himself talk in a true Monarchs spirit and said "Ok, had two good games, but I wouldn't have been so good, if the Monarchs defence hadn't been as good as they are. It really makes my life easier". But team-captain Al MacInnis didn't really agree with Mike, "Mike should have all the credit. He's excellent, and is the league's most valuable player in my opinion". 2nd goalie Andrei Trefilov had this to say: "What can I say. Vernon is unhuman in the net sometimes. It it hard for me to get any ice-time when he plays like he does. I'm used to play every game, but now I'm just 2nd. But I fight, and I think that I'll be a better goalie now when I fight for the 1st position with Vernon". Alexander Daigle has started to payoff his salary. He had two good games and said after the game. "It's easy to score, when playing with Forsberg. And I think that it's easy to play in this european manage team. I like this european style, and I think it will bring us a long way in the future". WEEKLY INTERVIEW ****** ****************************************** Hi everyone! I'm back this week with another interview with another GM. This week I visited the Mallrats out of Albany, N.Y. So I welcome, GM of the Albany Mallrats, Adam Ardis. Jim: Hi Adam!!!! How you doing? Adam: I'm doing great! It's about time you got around to inverviewing me! Jim: Yeah, maybe it is, but there are many intresting teams out there. Well, over to the interview Adam. You have been in the shadow of Bangers and Monarchs all season. Do you like the situation where you aren't the favorite in your Division? Adam: I like being the underdog. It makes our wins that much sweeter. At the beginning of the season we were leading the league, but a slump took us far down in the standings. It wasn't until I made the trade for Mario Lemieux that we started rising again. Jim: Lets talk about that deal some more. Mr. Shumka of the Drizzle has earlier stated in an interview that he is pleased with the deal Lemieux - Renberg. Are you, and is anything you can tell us about that deal? Adam(grinning evilly): Am I pleased with that deal? I think the answer to that is obvious. At the time of the trade, I had the Legion of Doom line going, and they were getting it done, but Shumka was looking for a RW so I offered him Renberg for Lemieux, and he jumped on it. Stat-wise, they look even, but I have seen Lemieux play before, and I was very excited to pull the trigger on this deal. I knew the pairing of Lemieux and Lindros would wreak havoc on the WHL, and for the most part it has. Jim: So, you probably have the most powerful line in the WHL. Lemieux and Lindros! I have yet to see Mallrats play, so who is the third guy, and is Lemieux and Lindros double-shifted? Adam: Hehehe. The unsung hero on the LW is John LeClair. He has been pretty quiet this season, but he's pitching in. He was hurt for a few games along the way, but if a team doesn't watch out, he'll jump up and bite you. On a line with Lemieux and Lindros, you can't be taken lightly. As for double-shifting, I am not at liberty to answer that question at this time. Jim: Heheh, I understand! Nobody could believe that someone would catch Fedorov in points this season. But both Lindros and Lemieux are on their way. Any comment on that? Adam: Both Lemieux and Lindros are great players in this league, and putting them on the same line only doubles their effect. Since the trade, they both have been putting up goals like wildfire. With each other passing them the puck, they are unstoppable. If you ask me, I think Lemieux will catch Fedorov first, then Lindros, not to take anything away from Sergei, but he's at a disadvantage. Jim: So, Adam Who is the most valuable player, Lemieux or Lindros? Adam: Lindros has to be the MVP of this team. Before Lemieux came, he carried the team on his back to one of the best records in the league. And since the addition of Lemieux, he's only gotten better. He's the man. An underlying hero has to be defenseman Dimitri Mironov. He's quietly achieved a great season defenseively, and is a main contributor to this team winning. Jim: Talking about Mironov. I must say I'm little suprisied over his good performance so far this season. Are you? Adam: Not at all. When I drafted him, I knew he could fit in very well on this team, and he has not disappointed. Jim: You currently have 80 points. The Grunts, the Agents and the Gangstaz could all reach you. Are you worried about not reaching the playoffs? Adam: Absolutely not. The Mallrats are one of the hottest teams in the league, and the team is pulling together down the stretch run. Jim: What do you think of the situation where the Adams division is as powerful as it is? Do you think that the League office should consider a change here? Adam: The balance of the league will change when the inexperienced GMs get the hang of the game. You'll see, teams that are at the bottom will draft better next time along and build contenders. I don't think it's an accident that this division is the best in the league, there is probably a lot more experience here. Jim: I think myself that Mallrats are favorites to win the Cup. I think you agree with me. But who will be your thoughest oppenents in the playoffs? Adam: Getting out of the Adams division will be tough, but come playoff time I think we will be on the rise. I still think we have a great shot at winning the division and the President's trophy. That's what we're shooting for. Everyone must see the full force of the Mallrats! Jim: What do you think of the WHL. Feel free to say what you really think? Adam: I was worried when Kevin decided he couldn't run the league anymore. I even went so far to volunteer to become commissioner, but then Shaun stepped up and I knew he would take the reigns well. I helped him out in the beginning, but he took off on his own like a newborn eagle. The league has a lot of potential, and I'm happy to be a part of it. Jim: And I think you and all other GM's should be. This is the hardest league right know. Oh, right, back to the interview, the league hasn't had any big rivalries so far. Is their any team you have a rivalry with? Adam: I would say so. By a freak coincidence, the Grunts, coached by Mr. Dave Moore, was put into our division. Well before the WHL there was a building rivalry between the two of us. It's a friendly rivalry, of course, but we're at each other constantly. Of course, I have had the better of him in just about all of the instances, but there's always next time, Dave. This WHL season will not be an exception. The Mallrats would love to eliminate the Grunts from the playoffs, and will pull no punches if we meet in the playoffs. Jim: So, let's see if Mallrats face rival Grunts in the playoffs. Could be interesting. I wish you good luck in the future with the team and playoffs, and if you don't have any thing else you want to say, I would like to thank you for your time. FORWARD OF THE WEEK (Game 62-67) Well, this week there were a lot of outstanding forwards. The Mallrats shone. Lemieux had eight points in seven games and Lindros had eleven in the same span. But this week the Forward of the Week award goes to Steve Yzerman of the Raptors. Stevie Y scored seven goals and added two assists for nine points in six games. Infact, he had five points in one game alone. 4. DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK Ray Bourque was terrific this week. He had seven assists and eight points im six games while providing Bourquesque defense. That's why he's the player of the week. 5. GOALIE OF THE WEEK This week's Goalie of the Week honor goes to Mike Vernon of the Monarchs. In his six starts he had a shutout, a one-goal game, and two two-goal games. Also, he had a save percentage of .928 while maintaining a goals-against average of 2.00. 6. (Minneapolis/AP) The Minneapolis Monarchs had finished the regular season, and are possible President Trophy winners, and the team, the fans, and the management looked forward towards the playoffs. Monarchs was a healthy team, when Dave Poulin returned said GM Larsson a few days ago. But then it happened, without playing any games tonight, Monarchs got 2 injuries. Todd Gill, that has played superb hockey since arriving from Mustangs got a serious injury and is gone for at least 11 games. Mikko Makela is gone only 3 games. The Monarchs management refuse to comment how these players got injuried, but the Herald has reports that Gill and Makela got in a real big fight during today's practice. We will for sure be back with more reports about this. The Drizzle were eliminated from post-season contention after losing 7-0 in their second game in under fifteen hours. "Just a short announcement here, guys," said GM Shumka to the salivating newshounds, "As of now, I'm the coach of the team. Dave Shumka has been relieved of his duties, and I, Dave Shumka, will take over as coach." GM Shumka continued, "As you may know, Dave Shumka is a good friend of mine and it pains me to do this, but it has to be done. Any questions?" Most of the reporters were perplexed but this writer understands. /Dave Shumka Vancouver Sun Date: Thu, 18 Apr 1996 18:53:49 -0600 (MDT) Subject: WHL: Storr Sparkles in Debut Rookie goaltender Jamie Storr turned aside all 28 shots he faced in his WHL debut as the Edmonton Vikings shut out the Vancouver Drizzle 7-0. The Vikings have been red-hot of late and have to be to stay ahead of the charging Kodiaks. Storr was rather nonchalant after the game. "The guys made sure there were no real chances and once we got up by a few I knew I could let one or two in and it wouldn't matter so I just relaxed and made the save when I had too." Going into the playoffs both Roy and Storr will have to be on top of their games for the Vikings to go anywhere.
