Involved in the first ever WHL trade, the Huskies gambled taking a high pick at the expense of a handful of other picks, and then used the acquired pick to obtain Kirk McLean. Such a move stunned the media crowd here in Saskatoon as the Huskies had already acquired a competent goaltender in John Vanbiesbrouck and it was uncertain on why a second goaltender was needed so early in the draft with so many other great players around. It seems that the Huskies were interested in picking a good goaltender inhoping that another team would be in need of his services and they could better decide upon who exactly would be on the team. In the last 24 hours the Huskies have seen the departure of Mats Sundin and Kirk McLean and the arrival of Adam Oates and Ulf Dahlen. So the question is What the hell is GM Shaun Driver doing and if that sort of a trading frenzy will continue throughout the year. We contacted Shaun Driver in his office and asked him about the frequency of the trades. Shaun said "when we get into training camp we hope to have the team that will last with us throughout the season. But until then we are going to be open to trades as no player has a commitment to the team or city. It appears that they are trying to get as many Canucks or ex-Canucks as possible. The Kodiaks were looking for a smart, good passing, left winger and we got exactly that in Vincent," replied Kodiak owner Gary Peterson. The Glaciers have finally named named after weeks of paper work and training their team personnel and whole bit. So here it is... The Glaciers have just announced recently in a late night news conference the new 200 million dollar arena, the Iceburg where they will be playing and practising. It seats 21,000 and is rumored to have the most comfortable seats around. On top of that, they have finally found their team captain Mark Messier which was the 1st round pick in the draft. The assistant captain has not been found as of yet but they will be sure they'll get one soon. The Glaciers has also just announced that Kirk McLean of the NHL Vancouver Canucks will now work behind the bench of the expansion Glaciers to help them out to eventually win the cup since "goaltending wins games" says coach McLean. Ulf Dahlen has been on his way to the Monarchs earlier this season, when he was a Voodoo property. Ulf then said that he really would like to play for the Monarchs coach, Kent Nilsson. But he was traded to the Bridge City Huskies instead. GM Larsson then made the Huskies GM the same offer, and he accepted the trade, Verbeek for Dahlen. GM Larsson had this to say about the trade: "Huhu, finally Dahlen is in our roster. I think Dahlen is a great hockey player, with great potential. In a related article, it has been rumored that negotiations between Milton Entertainment Corp. and Mikael Renberg's agent have gone sour. Having signed all other players with little problem, it came as a shock that Mikael hasn't been signed. Several undrafted players from the Edmonton area also took part in the session which was run by the team's assistant coaches, Randy Gregg and Marcel Comeau. Both were pleased by the effort and the intensity in the scrimmage. Said Gregg, "The players all seem to be in really good shape and ready to start camp, you can definitely see the makings of a team here." Head coach/GM Lee McEwen watched from the stands as his team worked out. He was asked what was remaining to be done as the team is built. "Our major priority right now is to get some quality left wingers that can play at both ends of the ice. We're solid basically everywhere else." He refused to comment on whether he would be drafting left wingers or trading for them. After the scrimmage the team introduced the first captain in the team's history, Brent Sutter. With the collapse of the NHL the WHL seems to be the new premier hockey league. All the former NHL players have been put into a draft and the league is beginning to take shape. So are the teams. One of these teams is the Vancouver Voodoo. Dave Randorff: The Voodoo held a conference today unveiling the team logo. It is as expected the Voodoo dancer from the Stones, who are part owners, latest album, Voodoo Lounge. Darren Kinnaird: It's a little different but at the same time very stylish. It also has a certain mystique to it and that is something we like with our name. Dave R.: The Voodoo also opened their first day of training camp with everyone in attendance, except for Christian Ruuttu. He was waiting on a ruling from the leagueas to exactly which team he is supposed to be going to. Pat Quinn: He is a great player and we'd love to have him. One problem: he wasn't on our draft list. We actually had someone else in mind. Dave R.: We spoke to some of the players. Jason Arnott: I feel just a little out of shape. The ankle feels good after spending an hour in the shuttle last night. Greg Adams: I am really glad to be back in Vancouver. I love this city, and have a home here still thank goodness. They announced that Kirk Muller would lead them through the year as the first captain in franchise history. They handed out A's to Mark Tinordi and Dale Hunter. When asked about the choice Muller responded: "I couldn't be happier, I'm on a team that's commited to winning and I'm glad that I was chosen to lead them to the Holy land." Monarchs have traded Gaudreau, Oksiuta and Beranek for Steve Thomas and German Titov. Larsson had this to say about the trade: "I'm happy with it. Oksiuta, Beranek and Gaudreau are all good players, but Thomas and Titov will do more for the team, than those three would have done."
