Team owner and GM Lee McEwen began the conference first by announcing he will also undertake the coaching duties. "This team is going to have my imprint from the top all the way to the bottom. At this point in the franchise history I didn't feel comfortable handing the coaching duties over to someone else. This decision was reached when Glen Sather chose to retire rather than coach this club." McEwen then introduced his assistants, Dr. Randy Gregg, Ted Green and former Saskatoon Blades and Kelowna Rockets coach, Marcel Comeau. All were enthusiastic about working with the new club. Replacing George Burnett as Head Scout and Director of Player Personnel will be Captain Video, Roger Nielson. With the staff finally in place McEwen then brought out the team's first player to be introduced to the Edmonton media. Alexei Zhamnov gives the Vikings a high scoring center to work with in their inaugural season. McEwen was pleased with his selection. However, with Jacques behind the bench a new strategy has been formed as the Huskies have been looking towards adding depth to the roster and looking towards a Cup in the future. "The fans are going to have to be patient with the league, players, and management as all teams start at square one and it's anybody's game. The reason we're looking towards the future is because there are 24 teams all planning to win with their superstars and we feel than it's the depth of the team that will decide the champions because the star can't be on the ice at all time", Mr. Demers was quoted in saying. When asked of possible moves in the near future all that Jacques could say was that, "something may be already in the works." It should be an intriguing year... and hopefully the Cup will come to Saskatoon sooner than Jacques thinks. It was with great pleasure that Xavier Marion, President of the Chisholm Goalpost Hockey Club revealed that the team will be playing it's home games on the "Rink". Located at the center of the township, the Rink will be a state of the art facility. Constructed with the help of a pool of volunteers, the Rink should be ready for the season opener. Fortunately, because the Rink is an outdoor facility, the fans will not be without ticket for any of it's games. Seating can be accomodated along the top of the snowbanks alongside the boards. Xavier promised that all fans whether from the township or the neighboring towns with not be turned away as long as they bring their own chairs. (Free admission given to those that help with scrapping the ice between periods or with snow removal prior to all home games). The Goalpost have also announced the purchase of 2 new watering barrels complete with new chamois that will be watering the ice between periods so as to give more time for the intermission. Intermission activities will include "greased piggy on ice" among it's promotions. There will be four luxury boxes with a great view of the ice. These boxes will be located atop so as to be close to the snack bar. Corporations purchasing boxes include "Emile's Video and Satellite " and "Bob's Plumbing". Parking for all will be at the west end of Waltons cow pasture. All home games will be played at night so as not to give the home team advantage with respect to having sun in the eyes of their opponent. In keeping with their progressive philosophies, the Goalpost have announced the choice of their new team colors. Black is out, Teal is out. The new uniforms will combine the sharp mix of red, white and blue. Road sweaters will be red with a blue stripe and two white stripes across the breast. They have requested to the league that their road sweaters be also used at home, they need more time to get sponsorship money now that the salaries have gone out of control. Team president Marion was quoted as saying "We're just a small market team and if they want to piss their money away well ...well... I'll have to get some local kids to bring the fans in." Among other announcements made today, the Goalpost announced that food concession rights have been granted to the ladies auxiliary based on a 99 year exclusive lease. With the business part out of way, the front office staff of the Goalpost were unveiled to all those in attendance at the press conference. It was announced that Xavier Marion will remain the President and assume the General Manager position. It was to tremendous cheers when Henri (the pocket rocket) Richard entered the room to accept his coaching hat. During his acceptance speech, Richard unveiled that he plans to bring the Cyber Cup to Chisholm as often as he brought the cup called Stanley to Montreal. "Piece of cake", Richard responded when asked if he thinks he can bring the Cyber Cup to Montreal in the first year. Marion could be seen in the background squirming as Richard went on to indicate that the other franchises in the league were going to be pushovers. It is thought that maybe the outdoor facility, the Rink, might present problems for the other teams accustomed to indoor facilities. There is concern that if the Whitehorse Rapids begin outdoor practices, then there might be a challenge. It is Bryan Trottier, who will also be Asst. GM. He was convinced to leave the Penguins because of the opportunity to be a head coachand for the front office ability and chance to influence personnel. The new complex inside the mall will house 19,000 for hockey and just under 21,000 for special events. The Vikings jerseys are white with purple and gold trim. The road jerseys are purple with white and gold trim. The logo depicts a snarling norseman holding a hockey stick instead of an axe. The Viking vaguely resembles the legendary Thor but GM Lee McEwen denied the connection. Former teammates Eric Desjardins and Patrick Roy were reunited as well. Both said they look forward to playing together again and hopefully winning a championship together in Edmonton. GM McEwen had this to say on the acquisition of the 2 former Habs. He named himself coach and GM, in fact there's a rumor circulating that he may even suit up for the team. At the press conference he also unveiled the arena in which the Drizzle will be playing in. It is named after Conn Smythe and will be known as the Conn-Dome. "This building is freakin' huge!" remarqued Drizzle assistant coach Dave Shumka. And, he's right. Burke continued, "I mean, he gave me an offer that not one human being had accepted." GM Andreas Larsson commented Burke's statement, "He got a good offer from me, and if he don't take it, I just have to trade him to another club. And besides, if he has this attitude he don't fit into our organization anyway." Later, GM Larsson announced that the Canadian Brent McEwen will be the headscout for the Monarchs. Larsson said "Brent has done a terrific work as coach for a swedish first division club, and I think he's ready for a headscout position."
