Hamilton, Ontario - November 29th, 1996 The stands were nearly silent in Hamelton's hockey arena this morning for the match between the Struer Norsemen and the Hamilton Steelcats. The Norsemen buried the Steelcats under an unprecedented 13 Goals, taking the league record for most goals in one game from the Pittsburgh Quakers. The stands emtied out early in the third period. The score was 8-1 going in, and the fans knew that theirs was a lost cause. Even so, it was a very fast-paced game, with the Steelcats pulling off a respectable 36 shots on goal against the Norsemen's 48. The final score was 13-1. Team captain Mark Recchi of the Norsemen had this to say after the game: "We walked away with them, I can't help but be pleased! In fact we were playing so well this morning, that it was almost embarrassing taking so many goals. We got out there, and we worked hard. Everyone played really well. The Steelcats are a strong team, and we killed them!" Michal Sykora had a phenominal first match for the Norsemen, putting in both the first and last goals, as well as making 2 passes. As a result, Sykora received the first star of the match. What a great beginning! Ronnie Stern got his first hat-trick as well this morning, giving him the second star, and Ron Hextall picked up the third star for stopping 35 out of the 36 shots against him. The Norsemen are enjoying a 4 game undefeated streak, and are pushing for more. They want to secure second place in the Adams division. The race for second place is a tight one right now with the Corinthians, the Norsemen, and the Grunts all vying for the spot. The Grunts have the advantage, having played 3 fewer games than the Norsemen, and 4 fewer games than the Corinthians. Both the Norsemen and the Grunts are undefeated in their last 4 games, where the Corinthians are winless in their last 4. The Grunts will probably take second place, and the Norsemen will likely hold on to third place, bumping the proud Corinthians down to fourth. Marius Nielsen, for the Struer Journal
