Subject: WHL: Quaker Notebook

(Pittsburgh)  The Quakers opened the season with a convincing 5-3 victory.
Leading the way were Stephane Matteau, who hopefully can rebound from a
disappointing first season and strengthen the left side of the Quakers
offensive.  Also, playing well was all everything Jaromir Jagr.  Coach Bob
Johnson said, "Jags is the team leader and the key to our success this year."
Also impressing the coach was the defensive core with Glenn Wesley and Joe Reekie.

Other news:

**  Trade rumors are still flying around the Steel City with names of older
veterans being thrown about.  Most notably, Dino Ciccarelli and Grant Fuhr.

**  Youth is abounding on the Quakers with 6 first year players on the roster
including last night's starting goalie Craig Billington, along with 4 of their
six draft picks.  Also promoted from the farm team was Robert Petrovicky who lead
the Quakers farm team last year with 100 points.

**  The starting goaltender situation is still up in the air between Ron Hextall
and Billington.  Coach Johnson refuses to name the leader, but with Billington
starting the opening preseason game we believe him to be the favorite.  If that
is the case Hextall may be on his way out.

The fans of Pittsburgh are hoping for a great year, where the Quakers can improve
on last year's 3rd place division finish nad first  orund palyoff loss.  The new
division looks tough according to GM Todd Henry.

GM Henry has been busy on the league web page which may have a new look by the
end of the weekend.
